Under the direction of the pathologist, the Pathologist’s Assistant is responsible for the management of laboratory testing in the designated sections. The position requires thorough knowledge of both department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of pathology services . The Pathology Assistant a ssists in fine needle aspiration including maintenance of adequate supplies, reagent and transportation of fine needle aspiration cart to locations in the Hospital and Clinic; assists physicians and pathologists in obtaining adequate biological material, prepares and stains slides and submits samples in appropriate preservative solutions as directed by the pathologist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related science required.

2. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory, or visual fashion is essential. Special Characteristics:

3. Ability to direct and coordinate the efforts of others, ability to accurately judge the need for consultation regarding appropriate specimen dissections, and ability to establish and maintain friendly, cooperative relations with surgical staff, pathology staff, residents and secretaries.

4. Understand safety rules and regulations, management techniques, laws and the legal interpretations, which influence the practice of Medical Technology within the Laboratory and Pathology Department.

5. Knowledgeable of methods used to obtain clinical history including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc. when indicated.

6. Familiarity with dictation and dictation equipment and computer are beneficial.

B. Required Length and Type of Experience 1. Minimum five (5) years clinical experience

2. Three (3) years experience as a surgical pathology technician to include gross examination of tissue.

3. One (1) year Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement/Performance Improvement experience.

4. Working knowledge of OSHA requirements concerning chemical hygiene and blood-borne pathogens.

C. Required Licensure, Certification or Registry 1. Technologist level training

2. Licensed in the State of Florida

3. Completion of Pathologist’s Assistant training Program or HT (ASCP)
