Under the general supervision of a registered nurse, performs dialysis treatments and a variety of routine duties in the dialysis unit to enhance quality treatment for patients and supports the nursing staff. Performs the normal assigned duties of a Dialysis Patient Care Technician. Acts as a resource for Dialysis staff. Other areas of responsibility include QA requirements, complete and accurate documentation, and compliance with regulations, proper training and orientation for new/current staff members.


High school graduate or equivalent. Candidate should possess a general aptitude for the science/medical field

One plus years of related experience in dialysis preferred; or a related medical field

Current BLS certification (American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers) required

Demonstrates good interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, staff and physicians

Job Duties:

Evaluation Process: Methodology utilized to assess competency

Direct observation of performance

Successful completion of cognitive knowledge tests, self learning packets, or case studies

Satisfactory demonstration of skills under supervision in the clinical area or under simulation

Risk management or performance improvement data

Retrospective or concurrent chart reviews

Input from departmental and professional staff

Participation in in-services, continuing education programs, and departmental skills day

Accepts assignment and direction from licensed personnel

Utilizes MD prescription in carrying out assignment

Reports changes or problems in patient condition to a licensed nurse upon discovery

Completes assignment and demonstrates ability to adapt to changes in work load

Accurately obtains, documents and reports vital signs and rechecks as needed

Reports abnormal results to nurse

Accurately obtains and documents patient weight

Accurately measures and documents intake and output

Feeds patients as required

Transports patients as needed

Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting defective equipment promptly and cleaning minor spills as they occur

Uses appropriate patient safety devices and/or restraints as indicated by the patient care plan or directed by the nurse

Demonstrates principles of aseptic technique at all times

Records, communicates and delivers messages accurately and in a timely manner

Answers telephone and directs calls appropriately

Assembles patient record as requested

Enters orders and/or retrieves reports in Meditech System

Utilizes infection control techniques

Demonstrates respect for patient rights by:

Maintaining strict confidentiality of patient information

Acting as a patient advocate

Identifies breathlessness and pulselessness and initiates CPR as indicated

Participates in patient and family education by reinforcing physician's and/or nurse's instructions

Utilizes organization skills to complete assigned work effectively and on time

Consults with and keeps RN informed of activities, needs and problems related to patient care

Documents procedures performed in the patient's medical record and obtains signature of licensed nurse for verification

Attends educational programs, training seminars, and staff meetings as required

Completes projects as requested by Director or Clinical Manager

Physical Demands:

Assisting in lifting and moving patients weighing between 100-350 pounds is occasionally required. Standing and walking for significant amounts of time is occasionally necessary

Exposure to blood and body fluids and infectious patient on occasional basis

Must be able to sit, stand, push/pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, and walk most of the time

Must be able to use hands to finger, grasp and feel

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally

Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and ability to adjust focus

Must be able to operate all equipment in the department and be able to troubleshoot basic mechanical problems with equipment

Must be in good physical condition, able to lift 25 pounds and assist wheelchair and partly immobile patients in and out of treatment chairs

Must be able to clearly recognize alarms, understand and follow calls and instructions

Work Environment:

Works near moving mechanical parts with risk of electric shock most of the time

Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals occasionally

Hospital/clinic setting with varying degrees of noise level and activity
