Selected candidate will assist engineers on a variety of tasks focusing primarily on pavement engineering. Candidate will assist with all aspects of project delivery including project scoping, budgeting, field data collection, data analysis, report writing, and other communications. This position is a part time internship anticipated 15-25 hours per week based on workload and/or availability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Assist with performing pavement engineering analysis and design. Analysis and design will be performed using a variety of formats including complex spreadsheets and software applications.
Assist with preparing project scope, proposal writing and bid preparation for various engineering-related projects.
Assist with field data collection of pavement services including Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), pavement coring, and other subsurface investigations. Must be able to follow detailed, established test procedures.
Contribute to applied research related projects including literature searches, data mining, statistical analyses, guideline development, and assist with report writing.
Conduct detailed pavement condition surveys, via walking and/or windshield evaluations.
Assists with geotechnical related projects by identifying and classifying various soil types and assigning appropriate laboratory tests.
Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform other job duties, as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: Candidate must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or be currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering program. Experience with highway or heavy construction, soils and pavement engineering, and/or soils and pavement engineering courses is preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office software is required and advanced experience with Microsoft Excel is preferred.
Language Skills: Candidate must have the ability to interpret and write technical documents and must have the ability to effectively communicate with clients and other employees of the organization.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations : Must have a valid driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and is exposed to computers for extended periods of time. The employee may occasionally be required to lift up to 50 pounds while working in the field.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is primarily exposed to office-type settings but may be exposed to outside weather conditions. While working outside, the employee may be working in/near moving traffic or near heavy equipment on a typical construction site. Appropriate safety equipment is provided and is required.
