The pharmacy practice resident is in a position that provides a wealth of opportunities to further develop professional competence, clinical decision making skills, and leadership skills at an accelerated pace under the supervision of an experienced, well trained, and knowledgeable team of clinical pharmacists. Through direct patient care and first hand experiences the resident will acquire and expand upon their leadership, communication, and problem solving skills. By practicing these skills the resident will develop a sense of professional responsibility and accountability to patients, colleagues, and the profession. During a one year residency experience in the dynamic and interactive pharmacy department the resident will learn to work as a team with fellow medical professionals and develop the confidence, attitudes, integrity and knowledge needed to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes for patients through rational, appropriate and economical pharmaceutical care. Through out the year the resident will be provided with feedback regarding their performance as a clinical practitioner.
Nature and Scope:
The pharmacy practice residency is designed to meet and adhere to the standards and practice principles set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
The residency is designed to encompass many areas of pharmacy practice through a broad range of rotations and staffing positions. The goals of the residency are aimed towards developing the advanced clinical skills and knowledge needed to provide optimal pharmaceutical care for our patients. The resident will expand upon initial pharmacy practice experiences acquired during clerkships and further develop leadership and problem solving skills, professional attitudes, responsibilities, and sense of accountability. The residency is established in such a way that any services the resident is required to provide complement the educational and clinical objectives of the program.
The residency is conducted over a fifty-two week period that begins the first weekday of July and ends the last weekday of June the following year. During this time the resident will complete various rotations that are either required or desired by the resident. A timeline of the rotations and their durations as well as a timeline for the resident project is developed during the first month of the residency and is based upon both resident and director desires, goals, and areas of interest. This timeline is a guide for the resident and director. Adjustments and changes can be made throughout the year. The resident is also expected to staff a minimum of four shifts per month performing the duties in the areas where competency has been achieved.
The resident will be assessed and evaluated regularly in order to provide valuable feedback and to ensure that the goals and objectives of the program are being met.
