Location: Thunder Mountain High School
Part Time Position (.40 FTE)

Classes are in the morning; hours may vary slightly from day to day but will be occur between the hours of 8:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.


Any position advertised August 15th or later will be a one-year only contract.

Position Summary : The successful individual will develop in each student an awareness of science in economic and social progress; motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving.

As a high school health teacher, this position also includes maintaining course alignment with state and national health standards. Content areas include dietary behaviors, physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, unintentional injury, suicide prevention training, at-risk youth, and sexual behaviors as well as supervision of student's required community service project with a local health agency.

As a high school Work Readiness teacher, this position also includes maintaining course alignment with state and national work readiness standards. Content areas include: organizational skills, note taking, research skills, time management, career/college opportunities, employability skills, work ethics and business etiquette are emphasized. Students learn about personal budgeting and cost of living/personal finance and refresh their technology skills using word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in education.
  • Valid Alaska teaching certificate with a secondary endorsement, or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Must be federally highly-qualified in secondary education or willing and able to test for, and pass, the NCLB highly-qualified standard(s).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education desired.
  • Recent experience teaching high school students.
Compensation : Salary is dependent on experience and education. The Juneau School District offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefit package including medical, dental, and vision. This position is not eligible to participate in the Teachers Retirement System (TRS); it is part of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plan.
