Responsible for providing initial care to patients through the emergency room when on call and in the office.
Performs direct or follow-up patient care including the evaluation and management of the patient in the in-patient hospital setting, clinic setting, or emergency room under the supervision or medical direction of a physician following standard guidelines as required and within scope of practice.
Assists in the operating room with surgical procedures as required.
Duties, Tasks & Responsibilities:
Performs accurate and complete assessment of patients; interpreting subjective and objective data (including lab and diagnostic test results) to formulate a diagnosis and providing treatment plans within scope of practice; assesses and reassesses pain; assessments are age, culture and psychosocial appropriate.
Formulates a plan of care based on patients needs; formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluated the effectiveness of learning, including: educating the patient/family regarding pain management and follow-up care instructions.
Performs minor procedures per credentialing/scope of practice; assists physician (s) with procedures; utilizes other departments to provide interdisciplinary care as appropriate; utilizes pain management techniques.
Collaborating with physicians and managing medical needs of patients; always deferring to the physician or other providers with difficult cases or when a case is out of the scope of practice. Making appropriate referrals and following up on referrals; performing/or ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/tests.
Demonstrating knowledge of medical necessity requirements; ordering, prescribing, dispensing and administering drugs and medical devices appropriately within the scope of practice; following the five medication rights, reducing the potential for medication errors. Documenting appropriately.
Follows medical records documentation guidelines regarding timeliness of reviews and completeness of documentation; obtaining and document accurate and thorough patients medical history including pertinent history, pain assessment, current medications, identified health risk factors and other needed information.
Performs all aspects of patients care in an environment that optimize patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Experience & Education
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant's Program
National certification by the NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) or certification eligible.
Certification must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment.
Current BLS Certification
Current ACLS Certification preferred
Registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) if applicable.
Prior experience preferred.
Basic computer knowledge
Knowledge of sterile technique, suture materials, names of basic instruments required.
Psychomotor skills or the capacity to acquire those skills with some instruction -- i.e. surgical knot tying, wound suturing, and identification of tissue planes.
