Providing clinical support within scope of certification/license to include but not limited to:

·

Taking medical histories

·

Recording vital signs

·

Explaining treatment procedures to patients

·

Preparing patients for examinations

·

Assisting physician with examinations and as needed

In addition, EMT licensed medical assistant may do the following within

scope of license to include but not limited to:
·

Perform 12-lead ECG

·

Airway maintenance as required by emergency

·

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

·

Automated defibrillation as required by emergency

·

Glucose measurement

·

Oxygen administration

·

Pulse oximetry

·

Vital sign assessment

·

Phlebotomy

·

IV administration

·

Medication administration within the scope of license

·

Wound care

·

Assisting with minor office procedures

Patient Population

:

Infant:
0 – 12 months.

Toddler:
13 months – 4 years.

Child:
5 – 9 years.

Adolescent:
10 – 17 years.

Adult:
18 – 64 years.

Geriatric:
65 + years.

Internal and External

Contacts:
Nursing Personnel, Patients, Visitors, Hospital Employees, and Physicians.

Qualifications

:

Current Medical Assistant certification in North Carolina, CNA-II, LPN or EMT with active NC license.

Graduation from an approved Health Care Technician program will also be considered. Must have current BLS certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire date.

Physical Demands

:

Good physical and mental health.

Spends most of time walking and standing.

Practices good body mechanics.

Emotional maturity and stability.

Requires lifting and/or carrying of objects not to exceed 35 pounds.

Requires moving (or assisting in movement) of patients.

Requires good visual (to include proper color vision) and hearing acuity (ability to distinguish sounds or tones).

Requires hand/eye coordination to ensure proper use of instruments / equipment, etc.

Requires ability to communicate verbally to patients, staff and visitors.

Requires ability to walk for lengthy periods of time and to climb stairs without assistance.

Some bending required assisting with patients, moving of equipment, etc.

Requires pushing of objects (primarily equipment, etc.).

Requires use of medical equipment and supplies.

Subject to electrical shock, cuts, etc., in use of equipment and supplies.

May come in contact with communicable disease from patients, families, etc.

Subject to needlesticks during use of syringes and needles.

Requires good manual dexterity in use of equipment and supplies.

Subject to eyestrain due to extensive use of computer terminals.

Requires repetitive motion during workday.

Subject to dust and dirt in performance of duties.

Requires analytical ability to make appropriate judgement.

Ability to make proper calculations critical.

Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling (as necessary) in performance of duties.

Requires excellent interpersonal skills.

Pushes / pulls or moves / lifts heavy equipment / supplies.

Frequent contact with water or other liquid.

Accountable to:
Physician Practices Manager with clinical oversight by Chief Nursing Officer

Work Environment

:

Busy patient care area.

Works in a temperature controlled patient care area.

Works with common office supplies and equipment.

Requires contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.

Exposed to hazardous agents, body fluids and wastes.

Handles emergency or crisis situations as well as multiple duties at one time.

Requires judgement / action which could result in serious consequences.

Subject to many interruptions.

Must use discretion in handling confidential information.
