Special Information:
The purpose of the Medical Director is to supervise and manage the medical services of the facility to meet and coordinate the treatment of complex and inter-related addictive, psychiatric and physical disorders of patients, consistent with the mission of the facility, Division and Department, as well as meeting the criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine medically monitored, intensive, in-patient treatment (Level III.5 and Level III.7). This requires the establishment of a close, professional working relationship with the professional staff of the facility as well as developing and fostering the same relationship with providers across the state and within other facilities of the Division. Must effectively perform as a member of the facility Management Team, providing input into the application of continuous quality management and treatment within the facility.

Duties:
Assures that the medical service delivery system of the facility meets with all applicable state, ASAM or other regulatory bodies, regulations designed to serve the needs of the patients. Provides primary medical care to patients during the scheduled work day and as needed by on-call availability. Diagnose and treat each patient, within the parameters of the facility scope of care, for their addiction, physical disorders and psychiatric disorders by establishing an effective and efficient medical treatment regimen, including the use of appropriate medications, and providing detailed documentation of the same in the patient medical record. Provides expert medical consultation and advice to contracted and relief physicians, nursing staff and other professional staff of the facility. Performs physicals and medical evaluation of all admitted patients, within 24 hours of their admission, in an effective and efficient manner, which should not normally exceed one hour in length. Responds to patient medical requests within 24 hours of being triaged by nursing staff and within 48 hours of submission by the patient (excluding week-ends). Conducts daily rounds of all patients admitted for detoxification and assures the application of appropriate and acceptable medical practices are applied, for the specific drug that detoxification is being conducted for, and transfers patients needing hospital based acute care as may be appropriate or necessary. Conducts daily rounds of all patients admitted on the Medical Treatment Unit, for conditions other than detoxification, assuring and monitoring their effective treatment progression, or transfers patients to hospital based, acute care as may be appropriate or necessary, based on patient need. Develops, implements and revises facility medical policies, procedures and protocols, consistent with established and current medical practices for physical, addictions and co-occurring addictions/ psychiatric disordered patients. Assures the accurate, complete and timely documentation of all applicable medical records. Effectively participates as a member of the facility Management Team. R esponsibly and effectively manages the expenditures of budget line items specifically related to medication and other medical supplies, assuring these line items are not exceeded, while providing for the needs of the patients within these parameters. Coordinates the facility medication formulary with the contracted pharmacy provider and ensures that medications prescribed are within the paramaters of the formulary.
Competencies:
It is important for the incumbent to have a thorough knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of general medicine and the medical treatment of adults with addictions and co-occurring addictions and psychiatric disorders. A thorough knowledge of detoxification procedures, practices and precautions related to a wide variety of addictive agents; to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, specifically related to the basic management of human and fiscal resources; an ability to be efficient and expedient in recordkeeping requirements; knowledge of the interrelationship of physical, addictive and psychiatric disorders and the ability to separate and integrate as necessary and required for the effective treatment of patients; an understanding and practical application of the use of common medications in the treatment of addictions and psychiatric disorders including actions, interactions and contraindications.
Education/Experience:
Post-graduate degree or equivalent (e.g. Master’s, JD) MD
The incumbent is required to have a current and unencumbered license to practice medicine in the
State of Montana as well as a current and unencumbered Montana DEA license to prescribe medication.
