Carries out research and builds new programs at the forefront of materials science. Specifically responsible for planning and implementing synchrotron radiation research which provides fundamental information and interpretation of experimental results on properties of condensed matter; and for reporting relevant results in an appropriate form. Must develop all or part of research program of interest to goals of the Division.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Considerable knowledge of the applications of experimental techniques for the study of structure of solids. Considerable knowledge of synchrotron radiation as applied to materials science, particularly regarding time-dependent studies and coherent x-ray scattering. Considerable skill in formulating scientific problems. Considerable skill in designing and implementing high-quality experiments. Considerable skill in understanding abstract concepts and synthesizing results within the current experimental and theoretical framework. Considerable skill in written and oral communication.
Good knowledge of additional areas of materials science.
Comprehensive level of scientific knowledge and sophistication required is that normally associated with a Ph.D. and at least 10 years experience beyond a Ph.D.; able to choose and conduct their own research areas.
Minimum Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree and 15+ years work experience, or Master's Degree and 12+ years work experience, or Doctorate and 10+ years or their equivalents
