The Plant Controller is responsible for directing the financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations, including financial statements with supporting schedules for the guidance of management. The Plant Controller is responsible for the Company’s financial plans and policies, its accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with lending institutions and the financial community, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports. The position involves supervision over general accounting, property accounting, internal auditing, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, and budgetary controls. The Plant Controller ensures effective team development of the finance function through performance management processes and serves as a key member of the finance network across the system in developing our functional capability.
Supports and promotes food safety and quality program indicatives within the plant environment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare reports that summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in a manufacturing expense organization.
Directs preparation of budgets, reviews budget proposals, and prepares necessary supporting documentation and justification.
Advise management about insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities. Direct determination of depreciation rates to apply to capital assets.
Provides management with timely reviews of organization’s financial status and progress in its various programs and activities. Coordinate the month-end and year-end closing process.
Manage the Finance Department.
Serve as a key member of the plant leadership team in developing the plant’s strategic direction, establishing priorities and allocating resources.
Work effectively with plant functional managers to develop and maintain a positive employee relations environment.
Accountability for financial support and follow up of capital projects.
Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned or per each location’s needs.
Decision-Making Authority/Accountability Level:
This is a staff level manager typically responsible for 3-7 direct reports. This role has responsibility for all direct reports including high-level involvement relative to hire, fire, and disciplinary decisions. Responsible for insuring accepted accounting procedures are followed. This role makes recommendations and decisions based on analysis of the plant’s financial data and trends. Errors in decisions could impact company reputation and create financial loss to the company. Interacts with corporate, vendors, other peers and managers within the facility and network.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- Minimum of 5-10 years experience in all aspects of accounting, includes 5 years experience as a Finance Manager or Controller.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficient knowledge of Excel and other computer programs as required.
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills required.
- Proven management experience.
- Strong ability to influence and provide leadership.
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Ability to take initiative, to maintain confidentiality, to meet deadlines, and to work in a team environment.
- Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment.
- Prior experience working in a union environment.
