The Police Dispatcher acts as a liaison between the citizens and police officers during a call for service and/or emergency incident to help ensure the safety of everyone involved by accurately relaying important information. They elicit necessary information and details from callers, make decisions regarding the nature of the call and determine what course of action is required. The Dispatcher is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency voice and TDD calls for service and entering the information into the computer using a keyboard and computer aided dispatch system while communicating with field units using a complex two-way radio system. They are responsible for recording and monitoring all the police officers’ activities and locations during the shift while maintaining proper records, and preparing reports.
Qualifications include HS/GED, ability to accurately keyboard/type a minimum of 40 WPM. Previous experience in this field or a history of working in a high-stress multi-tasking environment is desired. Applicants must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, which include nights, weekends, holidays and periodic overtime assignments. Applicants must pass a typing test, a written position compatibility profile, polygraph and psychological exams, an extensive background investigation, as well as an oral interview board. A pre-employment physical exam including a drug screen will be required. Salary range is $35,096 to $43,677, annually with an excellent benefits and retirement package included.
