- Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or by motorized vehicle to control traffic, prevent or deter crime and arrest violators; issues warnings or citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicle laws are observed; enforces Federal and State laws as well as University rules.
- Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performs follow-up duties on crimes/accidents as directed by supervisor; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts; files appropriate reports as directed by federal, state, or local legal requirements.
- Prepares detailed written reports of crimes, accidents, and incidents.
- Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service; makes decisions based on analysis of situation and facts.
- Serve warrants, subpoenas or other court processes as necessary.
- Responds to public service calls such as delivering emergency messages, motorist assists, animal complaints, civil complaints, domestic disturbances.
- Investigates reports of missing persons, identifies areas of potential crimes or unsafe conditions; reports conditions and takes corrective actions.
- Works with the university residents/community and other outside public agencies to solve residential/university concerns.
- Make oral presentations to citizen groups on crime prevention/public safety issues.
- Train sworn and non-sworn personnel on departmental policies, procedures and activities.
- Exposure to potentially hazardous, uncontrollable and life threatening situations.
- Work is performed in all weather conditions.
- Work may include sitting and or standing for extended periods of time.
- Work requires walking, running, lifting, and climbing during efforts to catch or subdue hostile individuals.
- Situations move quickly from low stress to high stress.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- 21 years of age upon completion of academy, high school diploma or GED, U.S. citizen, meet AZPOST standards (www.azpost.state.az.us);OR
- Possess officer in good standing certification with Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board; OR
- Equivalent out-of-state certification; must obtain AZPOST certification within 60 days from date of hire; AND
- Possession of a current Arizona Class D driver¿s license upon employment.
- Knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures.
- Skill in analytical, objective observation of situations and quick decision making.
- Maintain proficiency in law enforcement equipment.
- Maintain ability to perform to physical requirements of the job.
- Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
- Skill in the accurate and complete recording of information.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and written formats.
- Skill in keyboarding and the operation of a personal computer.
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

$47,000 minimum entry level.
This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
