This important role is responsible for assuring the alignment of IT services to the needs of the business, current and future. As such, the Portfolio Manager leads IT’s efforts to understand deeply where the business is today, where it is going in the future, how well the IT platform(s) (applications, infrastructure, service management, etc.) are supporting the business, and what things need to be done to fill gaps. The Portfolio Manager is a business manager. He/she must be able to facilitate reviews of the business and the IT portfolio. He/she must be able to formulate business cases, shape programs/projects, create continuous improvement strategies and interface with both the business and IT competencies to drive value for the business. He/she may also be the IT face of the business in front of customers.

The Portfolio Manager must have strong Project Management skills, and may need to Program/Project Manage at times, while maintaining the broader strategic focus of this role.

Portfolio Assessment and Planning
· Conduct periodic reviews of the business and IT portfolio in order to assess the degree to which IT is driving value for the business
· Conceive of IT innovations, strategies and programs that will have positive value and returns for the business
· Develop business cases in partnership with the business to drive strategic programs/projects
· Develop and maintain an IT roadmap depicting the systems portfolio over an agreed planning horizon. The roadmap should show the current systems, future systems and intervening projects to achieve agreed and funded goals.
· Conduct periodic briefings to spur inspiration around innovations and new capabilities that will drive value for the business. These may include business model changes, new technologies, etc.
· Review and improve processes for engaging IT, whether for new project requests or requests for service.
· Design, propose and implement an organization structure that best delivers IT value to the business.
Program and Project Delivery
Shape programs and projects for the portfolio, based on business requests for projects and/or based on proposed portfolio strategy projects.
· Accountable for estimation of projects and requests for service. Analysts in the portfolio may be assigned Responsibility for estimate coordination, but the Portfolio Manager should be aware of what’s being requested, how it fits strategically and opportunities for identifying solution options.
· Act as Program Manager or Project Manager in some instances where the importance of the program/project warrants, and/or where bandwidth allows.
· Interface with business and IT stakeholders to capture status, assess risks and identify service improvement opportunities in cases where service levels are not being met.
Portfolio Reviews
Capture and present the status of Programs, Projects and Services to business stakeholders at intervals agreed with the business.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree required; Advanced degree preferred. Minimum of 7 - 10 years of Program/Project Management and/or relevant Operations experience required. 5 or more years of people management experience required.
