Job Description:
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute is an interdisciplinary institution dedicated to conducting basic, clinical and translational research on conditions and diseases that affect children, and is part of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania research community.
A postdoctoral researcher position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Marc Vermulst at the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine at CHOP/UPenn.
The primary goal of our laboratory is to understand the mechanistic basis of the aging process. Two projects are currently available:
Project 1: We have found that transcriptional errors cause proteotoxicity and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to follow up on our current findings, and to move our experiments into a transgenic mouse model. Extensive expertise in yeast genetics is required for this project, as well as a creative approach to science, and a strong motivation for aging research.
Project 2: We are using mitochondrial genetics, combined with massive, but detailed sequencing techniques to touch on stem cell behavior, tumor biology and the subcellular dynamics of mtDNA molecules in transgenic mouse models. The successful candidate must have a broad interest in mammalian cell biology, and experience with genomic approaches.
To support each of these projects, the candidate will have direct access to numerous research cores, as well as state-of-the-art equipment present in the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine, which is headed by Dr. Douglas Wallace. CHOP has been voted the number one children’s hospital in the country in 2013, and is part of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the premier research institutions in the US. The successful candidate will work in an open lab space that is shared with, and supported by two other laboratories, and will work closely with the other members of the research team to achieve their goals.
