Major/Essential Duties of Job

Validation of a greenbug resistance gene, Gb3, including transformation, virus induced gene silence, and mutation using EMS. Use of genetics and genomics techniques to study drought tolerance, insect resistance, and disease resistance traits in the U.S. High Plains, including bi-parental and association mapping, marker-assisted and genomic selection. DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, real time PCR, gene expression analysis, and utilization of software to analyze results including linkage map construction, QTL analysis, sequence alignment, gene identification, and genomic selection. Greenhouse related work including planting, management and harvesting. Field related work for the projects including preparing for planting, measuring any parameters related to projects. Attend in-state and out-of-state meetings related to projects. Supervise student workers.

Occasional Duties

Travel away from headquarters as requested. Other job related duties as required.

Required Education:
PhD in crop genetics and breeding or molecular genetics or other related field.

Preferred Education:
Postdoctoral experience in genetic study.

Required Experience:
DNA and RNA analysis, gene/QTL mapping.

Preferred Experience:
RT-PCR, cDNA contstruction, marker development.

Required licenses, certifications, or registrations:
License to drive a State vehicle.

Preferred licenses, certifications, or registrations:
Radioactive or Biosafety I.

Required special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Data analysis using SAS, mapmaker, QTL Cartographer, and software for gene expression analysis. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others, and communicate ability to communicate fluently in the English language.

Preferred special knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Sequence alignment, candidate gene search, primer design, PCR condition optimization.

Other requirements or other factors:
Ability to establish effective working relationships with other faculty, clientele, and research administrators. Good communication skills.
