The Precision Machinist is responsible for supporting a state-of-the-art optics machining, metrology and prototyping facility, consisting of an ultra-precision machinery, optical interferometers, profilometers and associated supporting manufacturing equipment.

Responsibilities:
Performs typical machine shop operations to support the high accuracy fabrication facility as well as metrology projects.
•Self sufficient NC programming and operation of CNC lathe and mill with FANUC controller.
•Plans machine shop work flow and load, controls execution milestones, optimizes the task duration times.
•Detects and reports defective materials or questionable conditions to the department supervisor.
•Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.
•Performs prescribed preventative maintenance on machines and facility supporting equipment as required per the P.M. charts.
•Must be able to perform but not limited to the following tasks: milling, turning, drilling, taping, de-burring, and inspection (including generation of reports).
•The machinist may be asked to perform basic CAD operations such as the design of basic fixtures and modification of existing models/drawings.
•Must be familiar with the machine functions, capabilities and limitations in order to perform the tasks stated above.
•Adheres to strict confidentiality and proprietary practices and policies.
•Performs other duties related to the qualifications and requirements of the job.
Requirements:

  • Preferred Associate’s or Bachelor's in mechanical or industrial engineering, optics, physics or related sciences
  • 10+ years experience in fabricating and validating novel optical and mechanical elements and assemblies preferred; however, willing to train the right candidate
  • Solid experienced background with tools for mechanical design, simulation, and tolerance analysis (CAD/CAM)
  • Must be proficient with G-CODE, NC, GibbsCAM, Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks and MS Office
  • Possess excellent customer interface, communication, service and trouble-shooting skills
  • Possess proven ability to learn and apply practical, acquired work skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think methodical process oriented and be able to communicate processes
  • Highly motivated, ability to work effectively and efficiently on a variety of job assignments simultaneously (multi-tasking is essential)
  • Must be skilled at determining, setting, and meeting work deadlines for him/herself
  • 10+ years experience in fabricating and validating novel optical and mechanical elements and assemblies preferred; however, willing to train the right candidate
