Since its creation in 1969, UCS has been dedicated to promoting science in the public interest. The organization is widely recognized and highly regarded for its special role in ensuring that sound science is incorporated into complex policy decisions, and in amplifying the voices of scientists, engineers, and concerned citizens who want to advance creative solutions.

The president oversees an annual operating budget of approximately $26m and a staff of 140 in four offices across the United States. The position calls for a collaborative, non-ideological leader and spokesperson with proven skills in communication, fundraising, advocacy, and management, as well as intellectual breadth and political savvy. The ability to understand and effectively communicate complex technical and scientific issues is essential, and the president should come with some standing and stature in the scientific and/or policy arena.
