The Principal Controls Engineer, Process Analytical Technology, must be a creative, hands-on automation engineer to provide technical and business leadership to establish process analytical technology capability on production and pilot platforms. The position requires a wide application of principles, Process Excellence, Design Excellence, and practical experience in mechanical and process automation design in a regulated medical device assembly environment. The Principal Engineer works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of process automation and the effective application of electro-mechanical systems. In addition, the Principal Engineer will work on business critical process automation systems where erroneous decisions, recommendations or failure to achieve results might cause serious delays in project/program schedules and considerable expenditure. The Principal Engineer will be expected to conduct work individually, as well as partner with internal colleagues and external partners.

The Principal PAT Controls Engineer will be responsible for investigating, prototype and implement new technology to take us to the next generation quality and throughput. This role will pioneer implementation of technology in pilot and production systems, and contribute to the group's technology roadmap. This role will also identify, manage and works with strategic suppliers and outside consulting companies providing both automation and enterprise level services to implement the strategies. This position will supervise outside contractors during fabrication, installation and start-up activities, provide training to systems users and maintenance technicians for any associated projects, and serve an active role in the design of plant networks and server based data centers. As well as, have accountability for automation, systems integration, and controls for new products, investigation of new technologies, and for learning Vistakon product, process and equipment.

This role will interface with engineering and manufacturing organizations for system implementation. Identify improvement projects and ensure project initiatives align with business objectives. Develop implementation cost models for project development and implementation, and establish, coordinate and update status on goals, objectives and time constraints. Develop, collect, and manage use case requirements of internal customers, and interface with IT organization for integration and implementation of automation and knowledge systems. Develop Functional and Detailed Design Specifications from User Requirement Specifications. Develop closed loop process control and monitoring to produce high quality product. Develop, test and install PLC and control software as part of a highly automated, complex, high volume 24/7 validated production environment. Develop high quality right first time PLC and HMI code development strategy from Functional and Detailed Design Specifications. Adopt responsibility for the project management of control systems and software based projects across a cross functional multidiscipline team environment. Lead and participate on projects, provide technical support and make informed decisions on hardware and architecture selection. Monitor and analyze opportunities for the development of new or improved tools for process improvement activities. Identify and lead technical improvements. De-bug complex automation equipment. Maintain comprehensive documentation of code to Medical Device standards. Prioritize multiple tasks while working to tight schedules. Work closely with operations, FOD, validation, and quality to ensure successful implementation of projects. This will include defining instrumentation and control requirements, establishing design criteria, and performing required assessments. Adhere to environmental/safety policy and procedures and support department safety objectives, ensuring business and regulatory requirements are also satisfied.


This position requires a bachelor's degree in electrical/mechanical engineering, computer science or equivalent degree. Candidates with a master's degree in systems engineering are preferred.

This position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience working with automated control systems. In addition, experience in the design, development, debug and implementation of machine control systems, is also required. Candidates with a PLC background in Siemens S7, APT, Allen Bradley Control Logix 5000, Pilz Safety PLCs or Wonderware Intouch/ArchestrA HMI software are preferred. Experience with Automation Equipment, using PLCs, HMI, SCADA systems, Batch control is required. Experience with Enterprise level software systems, MRP, MES Systems, peer to peer communication is also required. Additional knowledge of printer systems, vision systems, robotics, BCR and RFID systems are preferred. Candidates Demonstrated experience working within a validated environment is required. In addition, this position requires strong discipline with regard to change control. Extensive knowledge of higher level database and software systems is required. Candidates with experience in startup of large scale automation production systems are preferred. This position requires people and management skills. Candidates with a good aptitude for chemical and plastics processes are preferred. Candidates with knowledge of FDA and IEEE standards and requirements are preferred. The ability to actively participate among cross-functional teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and to quality standards is required. The ability to Develop, debug and validate Control System software programs is required. This position requires the ability to analyze, understanding, debug and modify software programs written by other developers. Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills and experience in supporting or leading project teams is preferred. Project management experience is preferred. The ability to organize, plan and execute multiple tasks to tight schedules is preferred. This position requires a highly motivated self-starter, with the ability to document own work clearly and precisely.

This position may require up to 50% travel, both domestic and internationally. This position will be based in Jacksonville, FL.
