Depuy Synthes Mitek Sports Medicine develops minimally invasive, arthroscopic devices and instrumentation for soft tissue repair and joint movement.
Project leader/Principal engineer will be responsible for the product design and development aspects of a complex project with a focus on innovative implantable medical devices that address the customer needs for a complete procedural solution. The successful candidate will be leading cross-functional project teams through all phases of the product development process, including planning and execution through the product launch. The candidate will work closely with members of the project core team (marketing, manufacturing, quality, testing, etc.) and surgeons to define user needs, generate design concepts and prototypes, perform design evaluations (such as tolerance analysis, FEA, DOE's, simulated use testing, etc.), and support development of product and process validation plans and testing. The candidate will be leading teams, performing project management duties, and mentoring others in this role.
Project leader/Principal engineer will work with manufacturing engineering and suppliers to optimize designs for manufacturability and produce prototypes. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in the application of design controls and development processes, and possess strong organization skills to lead all aspects of the project management functions including scope definition, budgeting, and contingency planning. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage a varied workload, exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills and interface effectively with project teams, management and surgeons. The individual will also be expected to develop an expert knowledge of our product lines and detailed knowledge of various orthopedic anatomies and pathologies, and will assist in sales training and providing product support to the field. Some direct management of junior engineers may be included in this role.
A minimum of a BA/BS degree in Engineering plus 8 years of experience OR an MS degree in Engineering plus 6 years of experience is required. A degree in Biomedical, Biomechanical, or Mechanical Engineering with textile experience would be preferred. Previous medical device experience is required. Experience leading project teams strongly preferred. Previous experience in new product development is required. Must have experience in identifying user needs, medical device design principles, material selection, ability to verify and validate design concepts, and understand design failure modes is required. Demonstrated understanding of various types of mechanisms, materials, proper tolerancing, drafting standards, design for moldability and GD&T are preferred. Process excellence / six sigma training preferred. Proficiency utilizing the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc) is required. Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills are required.
The candidate must have a demonstrated background in developing creative solutions to solve design problems. Must demonstrate a strong initiative and follow through in executing project responsibilities, overcoming obstacles and balancing multiple priorities effectively. A successful track record of leading and influencing others without authority, participating on cross-functional teams and solid negotiating skills to bring products from concept to launch is required. The ability to look beyond conventional solutions and familiarity with technologies extending beyond traditional sports medicine therapies and products is desired. Must have the ability to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals, surgeons, customers and/ or teams, and work effectively as a project leader. The ability to review and critically assess patents and other forms of intellectual property is preferred. This position is based in Raynham, MA and may require travel up to 10%.
