Responsible for day-to-day management of all aspects of electronic and print production operations. Maintains schedules, work quality performance, and workflow efficiency from edited manuscripts through final publication. Works with the management team to establish and maintain efficient workflow procedures. Tracks, compiles, and reports quarterly production performance measures to senior management. Functions as a primary staff liaison with internal departments, outside vendors, and management. Oversees vendor timeliness and quality; investigates any delays, errors, or quality issues; and works with vendors to bring resolution to problems. Supervises production staff.

About the Unit

The Economics Research Center (ERC) was developed at the University of Chicago in 2001 to support basic empirical research in economics at Chicago directed toward policy problems. A core goal is to train students, and acquaint the wider world with the wealth of applied research activities being conducted at the University of Chicago.

Unit Job Summary

Print Production Manager: Manages all aspects of electronic and print production operations for the Economics Research Center, Professor James Heckman, his staff, his collaborators, and the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity project. Maintains schedules, staffing, work quality performance, and workflow efficiency from edited manuscripts through daily output or final publication. Works with internal or external agencies, as needed, to obtain typesetting and content and format requirements. Communicates daily work assignments to the Center's Associate Director, and other relevant parties, in order to contribute to effective general operations of the Center, and will communicate with the Center's administrative and research teams to anticipate workloads.

Works with the management team to establish and maintain efficient workflow procedures and accurate output, as well as to assess efficient staffing composition. Supervises and trains other staff, both full- and part-time. Investigates any delays, errors, or quality issues and is expected to work with the respective parties to resolve problems. Proactively develop and follow quality assurance procedures, and effective electronic organizational systems. Typesets electronic and print articles (including journal articles, book chapters, grant proposals and presentations), gather materials as requested, and has final responsibility for all components of the Production team. Investigates new technologies as needed to improve the output of electronic and printed materials.

Education

Bachelor's degree required.

Familiarity with econometric research or mathematics preferred.

Advanced degree preferred.

Experience

Minimum of three years of relevant experience required, preferably in an academic setting.

Ability to work evening, holiday and weekend hours as needed required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel, LaTeX, Adobe Professional suite required.

Experience with HTML, WinEdt, BiBTeX, and JabRef required.

Experience with add-ons, such as MathType and EndNote, preferred.
