Earthjustice’s Northeast office (in New York City) is now accepting applications for pro bono fellows for spring and fall 2013 (positions running through the summer are available in our Philadelphia, PA, office). These positions are designed for recent law school graduates with a fellowship or outside compensation who are seeking the opportunity to volunteer for at least 25 hours per week for a period of at least 3 months. Applicants are expected to work on a variety of environmental litigation projects.

Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations and communities. The organization operates out of nine regional offices, and the Northeast office focuses principally on issues related to coal-fired power, shale gas development, and environmental health.

Responsibilities : Pro bono fellows work under the direct supervision of attorneys in the development and prosecution of environmental litigation and other advocacy. Fellows will participate in a wide range of tasks that may include conducting case investigation, legal research, and discovery; meeting with clients and experts; and preparing memoranda, briefs, and other legal documents for administrative and judicial proceedings.

Qualifications : Qualifications include a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection; excellent research, analytic, and writing skills; and a strong work ethic. Significant knowledge of environmental and administrative law is a plus. We also value initiative, creative thinking, and the ability to work collegially with others. Applications are welcome from recent law school graduates with a fellowship or deferred/furloughed associates with outside compensation. There is no available compensation or benefits for these positions.

Application Procedure : Offers are made on a rolling basis, so applications should be submitted as soon as possible. Please send a cover letter, resume, unofficial law school transcript, legal writing sample, and names and contact information of three references (including at least one law professor or legal employer) by e-mail to: neoffice_jobs@earthjustice.org . The subject line should read: “Pro Bono Attorney Application – NY” (or “Pro Bono Attorney Application – PA” if applying for a position in the Philadelphia, PA, office). No telephone calls.
