The City of Idaho Falls is now accepting applications for candidates to participate in a Civil Service testing process to be held on July 16 &17, 2012, for the position of Probationary Police Officer. Police Officers preserve the public peace, protect life and property, prevent crimes, and arrest violators; patrol an assigned area using a police car, bicycle, or on foot; respond to calls for service and initiate police action when appropriate; new hires will serve as a Police Officer Trainee; for further information and a complete job description, please visit the job descriptions section of the HR web page.
Note: We encourage existing Police Officers from other agencies to participate in this testing process. Salary may be negotiable for candidates with two (2) or more years comparable experience as a Police Officer.
A Probationary Police Officer is assigned to the Patrol Unit and will serve a one-year probationary period. They work ten-hour shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Initial training will fall under the direction of the Training Unit. Officers will participate in a 12-week field-training program and the 10 week POST academy session that encompasses academic, physical, and practical training necessary to complete Idaho POST certification requirements.
The City of Idaho Falls will be conducting an open competitive application and testing process which will be used to establish an eligible list of Police Officer candidates. The ranked list of candidates that will come as a result of this testing process will be used to fill entry level Police Officer positions for a period of up to two (2) years. Candidate scores, which will determine the ranked order on the eligible list, will be comprised from the following:
1. Written examination with a passing score of 70% - 50% of overall score; the top 30 candidates will be invited to advance to the next steps.
2. Oral interview with interview panel - 50% of overall score
3. Physical Fitness Test Battery (PFTB) - Pass/Fail
By completing the electronic application for this testing process, the applicant is communicating his/her intent to participate in the written examination and any further evaluation steps; hardcopy applications will not be accepted. Please complete the electronic application in as much detail as possible. Candidates are encouraged to upload and attach an electronic copy of their high school and college transcripts (if applicable) to the job application, and any other documents that support the candidates education, training, and experience.
Candidates who fail to submit a completed electronic application or submit a resume in lieu of a completed electronic application will not be allowed to participate in the testing process. Candidates will be required to have photo identification available for review at all stages of the testing and evaluation process.
To be eligible candidates must have the following:
1. United States Citizenship (POST Certification Requirement)
2. 21 years of age by completion of the testing process, (July 17, 2012)
3. High School Diploma or GED Equivalent (Copy of Transcripts May Be Required)
4. A Valid Driver's License
5. The Ability to Successfully Complete All Testing Requirements
6. Good Written and Oral Communication Skills
7. The Ability to Function on a Day-to-Day Basis With Limited Supervision
8. Certified by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Council Within One Year of Employment
9. Successful Candidates Must Pass a Thorough Background Investigation and Polygraph Examination
10. Successful Candidates Must Pass Medical and Psychological Examinations (After a Contingent Offer of Employment)
Vision - 20/200 uncorrected vision in each eye with strong eye corrected to 20/20 and the weaker eye corrected to 20/60.
Hearing - Applicants must have unaided binaural hearing with a speech reception threshold (hearing loss for speech) that does not exceed twenty-five db in either ear.
Physical Fitness Testing Battery (PFTB) - Applicants must satisfactorily complete the PFTB, meeting minimum standards.
CRIMINAL RECORD/MILITARY RECORD:
A conviction or withheld judgment of any state, local or federal crime may be grounds for rejection. An applicant must be rejected who has been convicted of any felony crime regardless of whether the imposition of a sentence is deferred, withheld, or the penalty suspended. Dismissal from the military service, a bad conduct charge, dishonorable discharge, or other than honorable discharge will disqualify the applicant per POST certification requirements. General under honorable conditions may be grounds for rejection.
A record of suspensions, DWS, DUI convictions, or withheld judgment during the five years preceding application and habitual violations of five or more moving convictions during the three years preceding application will come under review by POST Council for certification.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION INFORMATION:

Parking Information: All applicants who are eligible to take the written examination will receive parking instructions and a parking pass via email prior to the test.

The written test will consist of 100 questions. This is a closed book examination; candidates will not be allowed to take any reference materials into the testing room, (no calculators will be allowed). The test will begin promptly at 9:15 AM; no candidates will be allowed entrance to the testing room if they are late. If a candidate needs any accommodation during the written examination, they must contact the Human Resources Office at 208-612-8248 at least one week prior to the test date.

The candidates with the top 30 written test scores will be invited to participate in the PFTB. Applicants must meet the PFTB minimum standards as described below; candidates will be scored as ‘PASS’ or ‘FAIL’. Before the test begins there will be an orientation session where candidates will be instructed on the various events.
Applicants must score at least the following minimums on each of the five tests with a rest period between events:
1. Vertical Jump - 14.0 Inches
2. 1 Minute Sit-Ups - 15 Repetitions
3. Minimum Pushups - 21 Repetitions
4. 300 Meter Run - 77 Seconds
5. 1.5 Mile Run/Walk - 17 Minutes, 17 Seconds
