Supervises the planning, development and execution of audio visual productions from concept to post-production edits and release working closely with faculty and staff throughout the University. Leads in conceptualizing the scope of each project through communications strategy/needs assessment and develops solutions, including research, writing, and copy editing to meet identified client needs. May lead planning and execution of online outreach projects. May mentor students in audio and video production and post production.

About the Unit

UChicago Creative is composed of the creative services teams within University Communications. Functioning as the in-house creative agency, UChicago Creative partners with departments and units across campus to create communications strategies and articulate the voice and vision of the University through a variety of mediums, including print, multimedia, social media, and websites.

Unit Job Summary

Producer: Part of the multimedia team within UChicago Creative. The team's strategic goal is to partner with fellow communications staff and units across campus to create high-quality video and audio communications that advance the communications strategies and ultimately the research, teaching, and outreach mission of the University. Reporting to the Creative Director for Content under the creative direction of the Assistant Creative Director for Multimedia, produces video and audio for a wide variety of projects, ranging from lectures captured with a single camera to more complex projects including promotional videos, features, news, documentary, and major events. Expected to meet a high level of creative and production standards.

Manages video and audio production: conceptualize the scope, create estimates and budgets, develop scripts, shoot, post-production, motion graphic design.

Assists and/or manages ISDN, broadcast studio, and webcast services.

Collaborates with UChicago Creative staff to create innovative and compelling video to be viewed at events, on the web, on mobile devices, and through social media.

Develops communication strategy for projects in collaboration with other UChicago Creative staff as well as colleagues within Communications.

Education

Bachelor's degree in communications field required.

Experience

A minimum of two years professional experience in multimedia production required.

Experience developing and tracking reliable effort and cost estimates and planning resources accordingly required.

Competencies

Ability to understand key target audiences, their needs, and their relative importance required.

Demonstrate talent and skill in video and audio production within a creative team in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment required.

Excellent client service orientation required.

High level of creativity with the ability to create compelling audio and video communications required.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously required.

Ability to problem solve on the spot required.

Sufficient technical knowledge to understand and deal with technical issues related to multimedia, including sound booth, broadcast studio, and webcasting services, required.

Ability to manage budgets successfully required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

Ability to engage with faculty research across a range of disciplines required.

High level of proficiency with audio/video recording, editing, and production software required, including Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, and Photoshop.

Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed required.

Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs of production equipment required.

Ability to travel as necessary required.

Skills in additional software, such as AfterEffects, Illustrator, Squeeze, Garageband, Fetch, Fugu, and Toast Titanium preferred.

Proficiency with design software preferred.

Experience with project management tools (e.g., FileMaker, Basecamp) preferred.

Familiarity with higher education technology, processes, and culture preferred.
