About the Position:
THERE ARE 2 VACANCIES FOR ARABIC SCHOOL DEAN.
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) offers foreign language instruction in more than two dozen languages on a schedule that extends throughout the year. The DLIFLC has 3 Middle East Schools specializing in the Arabic language and dialects. Courses are taught six hours per day, five days a week, with the exception of federal holidays and training holidays. Classes are conducted on a full time basis, 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday 7:45am to 4:45pm.
These positions are in the excepted service. Employment in the excepted service does not confer competitive status for other jobs in the federal civil service.
The position expiration date (not to exceed date) may be extended based on workload and funding and not subject to the 4 year limit for competitive service.
These po sitions may be converted to permanent (Tenure status) without further competition and at management's discretion.
Limited funding for moving expense (First Duty Station) may be authorized for the selectee(s) who is being hired for the first time in the federal government subject to provisions of the Joint Travel Regulations and an agency determination that this move is in the Government interest. If the person selected is a current permanent federal employee, Permanent Change of Station (PCS) allowances may be authorized, subject to the provisions of the Joint Travel Regulations and an agency determination that a PCS move is in the Government interest.
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center is located in Monterey, California overlooking the beautiful Monterey Peninsula. The area offers a variety of activities for the family and is a 1.5 hours drive from San Jose and 2 hours from San Francisco.

DUTIES:
As an Arabic School Dean, provides academic leadership for the faculty devoted to instruction in Modern Standard Arabic and Arabic dialects. Oversees the performance of teaching programs, language assessment programs, and academic support functions including course and curriculum developments, program evaluation, faculty professional development, and technology integrations. Manages the personnel and fiscal resources needed to support these activities. Supervises a faculty and staff workforce of 100-150 people directly and through first and second line supervisors. Incumbent represents the school and DLIFLC at professional and public meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
POSITIONS WILL BE FILLED AT THE PROFESSOR RANK .
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Doctoral degree with a major or minor in Foreign Language Education, TESOL, TEFL, Linguistics, Language, Literature, Education, Educational Psychology, Educational Technology, Translation & Interpretation, Cross-Cultural Studies, or Educational Administration. As an alternative, candidates must have comparable scholarship achievements related to the discipline of foreign language education, including other professional recognition, demonstration of inquiry, research and critical thinking skills. In addition to the doctoral degree or alternative education, six years of directly related work experience is required. The candidates must have used that experience to improve the program in which they worked. The candidate's experience must be in at least three of the following six fields: curriculum development, faculty development, program management, research and evaluation, teaching or testing.

DIRECTLY RELATED WORK: Work in the field or related to the field of this position including but not limited to teaching, leading or supervising foreign language education.
LANGUAGE EVALUATION: Positions require proficiency in a foreign language and in English. The minimum proficiency for the foreign language is a Level 3. Selectees will be tested for proficiency level in one of any languages taught at the DLIFLC. The minimum English proficiency is a Level 2 in speaking. A high level competency in Arabic is preferred but not required. The proficiency levels are defined by the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level descriptions and can be viewed at http://www.govtilr.org .
Education requirements as stated above must be obtained from an
accredited U.S. college or university. Accredited U.S. schools are those
