WITNESS uses video to open the eyes of the world to human rights violations. We empower people to transform personal stories of abuse into powerful tools for justice, promoting public engagement and policy change. WITNESS was co-founded in 1992 by musician and activist Peter Gabriel as the realization of Peter's vision of capturing the stories of human rights atrocities on video and putting them at the forefront of human rights campaigns. Since then, WITNESS has trained and partnered with thousands of human rights activists to utilize video for change in over 80 countries all over the world.
WITNESS ( www.witness.org ) is seeking a highly-motivated, self-directed individual to join WITNESS' Program department in the role of Program Assistant . The Program Assistant provides logistical and administrative support to the human rights video advocacy work of a ten-person Program team, managing programmatic materials, information, and queries.
Provide support to the Program staff and the daily operations of the Program department;
Provide support around three primary initiatives of the WITNESS Program Department:
a) "Tools and Tactics" which includes program initiatives that will increase the reach and scalability of WITNESS' learning and training on video advocacy, and building video for change peer-to-peer networks, and
b) Critical Response to specific situations and
c) Systems Change which provides infrastructure for the millions of people turning to video as a tool for change. Specific duties include:
Provide office-based support to outreach and trainings conducted by Program staff at WITNESS' office, or "on location" in U.S. and internationally, and assist Program staff as needed (including, preparing presentation/handout materials & cameras, coordinating with hosting organization, and coordinating all scheduling logistics);
Collect, compile, and summarize survey and other data from WITNESS trainings, other key metrics and present findings and reports to Program staff; and bi-annually compile and summarize all key data for presentation to the Board;
Provide administrative support on implementation of the 'Tools and Tactics' and System Change Initiatives including outreach to potential participants in training/toolkit programs and around Systems Change initiatives.
Respond to external and internal requests for information about WITNESS' programmatic activities, including responding to routine Program-related queries in WITNESS' external email accounts;\
Help maintain translator database, correspond with new translators and compile resumes;
Maintain and update Program-related content on the WITNESS website, both independently (minor drafting) and as provided by the Program staff;
Assist in the development of department-wide protocols and initiatives;
Assist Program Director and Deputy Program Director in collecting and summarizing Program information in connection with the annual budgeting process;
Compile and prepare Program materials as requested by Program staff;
Review and update case studies and other Program documents;
Prepare WITNESS accreditation and membership applications, for example, UN accreditation
Other duties as assigned.
Provide administrative assistance to Program staff on an as-needed basis, including serving as point person for Program staff when they are out-of-office;
Collect and compile monthly updates, annual Report and other organizational wide requests for input from Program team;
Coordinate travel (tickets, accommodations, visas, etc.) as needed for Program staff and their visiting Partners;
Coordinate weekly Program meeting agenda, compile necessary meeting materials and take minutes at meeting;
Assist with compiling materials and submitting paperwork for wire transfer requests and payment reconciliations for Program team and consultants;
Set up and maintain Program files;
Coordinate and facilitate packaging design and duplication of DVDs;
Perform assigned tasks by Program Director, Deputy Program Director or other Program staff.
Other – 10%
Coordinate Program participation in the Intern/Volunteer Program, including supporting outreach to potential candidates, and assessing suitability of Intern candidates for the Programmatic work;
Upon request, present and speak to visiting Partners and at conferences, training workshops, and universities for the purpose of discussing and building awareness around WITNESS' programs and mission;
Perform research and maintain research files for WITNESS issues of interest for current productions and projects, Program needs, and relating to WITNESS' NGO partners;
Other duties as assigned.
Work Experience: A minimum of 1-3 yearsrelated experience; at least one year working collaboratively with nonprofit organizations.
Education: Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree plus additional work experience.
Systems: Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications and database programs.
Work Habits : Demonstrates flexibility and an ability to effectively work as a part of a team; strong administrative, organizational, and logistical skills, including an ability to manage multiple priorities and keep track of details.
Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; good writing skills; oral and written fluency in English.
Language: Additional language proficiencies; French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Chinese preferred.
Human Rights/Advocacy: A strong interest, background and/or work experience in human rights advocacy; demonstrated commitment to social justice and WITNESS values and mission.
Knowledge of video and film being used in communication and advocacy contexts.
Video production experience, and/or knowledge of video, editing and related technologies.
HTML or web editing experience.
