The Open Internet Tools Project (OpenITP) seeks a skilled and well organized professional to augment our rapidly growing team as a program associate. This position includes program management, assisting with OpenITP°s full range of tasks, including conference planning, grant making, community coordination, and requires a technical background. Additional responsibilities include assisting with events and various administrative tasks as needed. The ideal candidate will have proven research skills, excellent writing and editing skills, and be a flexible, self-motivated and enthusiastic team player who works well without daily management.
This is the ideal position for candidates with experience in privacy and circumvention technology who wants to gain valuable experience towards a career in advocating for these technologies. OpenITP supports and incubates a collection of free and open source projects that enable anonymous, secure, reliable, and unrestricted communication on the Internet. Its goal is to enable people to talk directly to each other without being censored, surveilled or restricted. OpenITP works to make its projects more accessible to both users and developers, building collaborative, sustainable tools that enhance whole categories of communication technology.
This job takes place in both New York and Washington, DC. Applicants from both cities will be considered and occasional travel between those cities will be necessary. RESPONSIBILITIES Research free and open source projects. Compiling and tracking action items, preparing correspondence and maintaining records Provide research and writing support to the OpenITP Team, as needed.
Facilitate communication with team members and projects. Oversee grant activity and deliverables. Manage logistics and schedules for conference and hackfest planning. Perform various administrative duties, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications: A strong understanding of the value of privacy and free communication, as well as the threats to each. A demonstrated interest in the values, mission and technologies supported by OpenITP. A willingness to travel occasionally. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience collaborating with wikis, IRC and distributed version control tools. An ability to adapt to new tools, environments and tasks. Familiarity with free and open source software communities. Experience with GNU/Linux environment (especially Debian), and distributed systems.
Experience with private communication software, especially GPG or PGP. Facility with commonly-used open source productivity tools, e.g., Emacs. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Have a meticulous, self-motivated, and friendly nature.
