As the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves moves into a phase of driving investments, innovations, and operations to scale, the Alliance will maximize opportunities to demonstrate the environmental (including climate) and health benefits of adopting clean cooking technologies. The Program Manager, Environmental Health will provide programmatic and administrative support to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves research program at the intersection of its environment, climate, and health portfolios. As such, s/he will focus on the potential co-benefits of adopting clean cooking, including: linking household air pollution, ambient air pollution, and climate; bridging stove emissions and human exposure data; quantifying alleviation of cooking-related environmental degradation; quantifying net environment and climate impacts (including but not limited to short-lived climate pollutants such as black carbon). Research portfolios will include both modeled and measured impacts. The Program Manager will directly support the Director by coordinating research projects and activities, including conducting desk research, assisting with the development of requests for proposals, shepherding contracts, coordinating experts for technical panels, , and aiding in the development of resources and tools. S/he will also work closely with the markets, fuels, partnerships, communications, technical, and other staff on issues related to program coordination, market development, market enablement, communications, and partner and donor engagement. S/he would ideally be a credible expert in the field and be able to lead discussions, present research findings and represent the Alliance on health and climate/environment conferences and events. The role will be in support of the Alliance’s overall mission to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions.

Working Relationships:
The Program Manager reports to the Director, Research and Evaluation.

Research Program Coordination (70%)
  • Assist in the design and management of the Alliance’s environment, climate, and health portfolios, including provision of technical and strategic support for the program areas and activities, including grants and contracts, events, research, reports, and tools
  • Strengthen research networks in Alliance focus-countries through applied research and close collaboration with relevant researchers and stakeholders
  • Support convening of experts to support the research prioritization process and/or development of requests for proposals
  • Facilitate in-country technical workshops (and related follow up activities) focused on key research areas, with active collaboration from Alliance grantees in country
  • Provide technical inputs to Alliance team in support of proposal development and grant reporting, including translation of work plans into log frames

Knowledge Management and Communication (30%)
  • Regular, systematic review and distillation of published research to ensure that the Alliance and its partners are operating with the most accurate and current evidence base
  • Coordinate regular dissemination of research results and sector progress to Secretariat, partners, national alliances, and broader audiences via multiple channels and media, including development and update of content for reports, webinars, presentations, blogs, and website
  • Facilitate shared learning across partner countries and within the broader research communities
  • Seize opportunities to showcase Alliance research results at technical society meetings and relevant stakeholder conferences via coordination of technical symposia and side workshops as relevant

Selection Criteria:
  • Master’s degree or higher in energy and resources, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, environmental health, environmental science, or equivalent, including at least 5 to 7 years of relevant research and/or work experience. Applied experience in exposure science or environmental epidemiology preferred but not required.
  • Excellent writing skills, including grant writing, academic publications, and communications.
  • Proven analytical and project management skills, including the ability to move projects forward from inception to implementation to completion with adherence to deadlines;
  • Strong communications skills (speaking, writing, editing, and listening); with attention to detail and broad strategy and experience communicating to different audiences
  • Ability to follow instructions thoroughly while also providing a strategic and critical eye to identify and address additional gaps;
  • Ability and experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with people, internally and externally, from a wide-variety of types of organizations, cultural backgrounds, and functional expertise;
  • Willingness to travel, including internationally;
  • Flexibility, openness to new challenges, and the ability to thrive as part of a highly functioning, fast-paced group of professionals and to prioritize competing demands;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to be flexible with competing demands and deadlines;
  • Self-starter with the desire for continuous learning and the ability to synthesize information and respond positively to constructive feedback;
  • Ability to represent the organization with professionalism, diplomacy and self-confidence; and
  • Personal commitment to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and United Nations Foundation’s missions; demonstrated knowledge of global issues and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and United Nations Foundation’s programs and goals.

Benefits & Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience. Actual salary will depend on qualifications and anticipated contribution to the Foundation.
