Description Based in Midland, the Public Affairs Specialist is the first-line connection between Devon employees and the citizens, business and civic leaders and public officials in a multi-state area where Devon has a business presence. This position is focused on local community outreach activities that build the Devon reputation and brand and provide the basis for efforts to protect and improve the public policy environment in which Devon operates.
Help direct and oversee the company’s community outreach programs in West Texas and New Mexico where Devon has a business presence.
Be a visible and available presence among employees and other key stakeholders, continually developing and improving relationships with them as the first point of contact for Public Affairs resources and assistance in a multi-state area.
Coordinate site specific communications programs in field areas to build and maintain stakeholder relationships, communicate accurate and timely information to key audiences and provide proactive support in the communities where our employees live and work.
Direct public relations agencies in field areas.
Direct advertising strategy and implementation in field areas.
Develop community investment strategy and implementation in field areas; leverage donations.
Facilitate Devon employee Ambassador Program.
Develop and facilitate industry education/advocacy initiatives and participate in relevant industry associations and committees.
Coordinate local employee community/volunteer initiatives in field areas.
Facilitate and support employee engagement (grassroots) planning and strategy development on public policy issues in cooperation with division and corporate Public Affairs as well as line and staff groups.
Research and stay apprised of events and activities in elected officials’ districts; facilitate and coordinate employee engagement in district activities.
Facilitate and coordinate community engagement activities including tours, visits, presentations and media opportunities within operating areas.
Participate in field incident management teams and support crisis response efforts.
Support Operations and Public Affairs initiatives and issues management.
Must have a balanced combination of knowledge, experience and skills, and/or the ability to acquire and improve them, that includes:
Solid educational background including at least a bachelor’s degree, preferably in public relations or communications.
A minimum of five years experience in public relations, public affairs, communications or related fields.
Familiarity with the oil and natural gas industry in general, and the independent sector more specifically.
Familiarity with a broad range of Public Affairs resources available to achieve reputation, brand and public policy goals.
Ability to quickly initiate, improve and maintain stakeholder relationships based on Devon leadership attributes and its corporate values that lead to its role as a respected corporate citizen.
A proactive approach to gathering information and communicating it succinctly and quickly to executives, managers and employees.
Excellent writing and verbal skills.
Ability to continually prioritize efforts in response to changing situations and new information.
Keen interest in making things happen as opposed to reacting.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Professional appearance and demeanor.
Demonstration of listed prerequisites in previous employment.
Travel to field areas required approximately 25-30% of the time
