$25.66 - $38.49 per hour ($53,377 - $80,065 estimated annual)

The San Mateo County Transit District serves nearly 100,000 customers each weekday on its SamTrans buses, Redi-Wheels paratransit vehicles, Caltrain commuter rail cars and shuttles, as well as a robust capital program. The Transit District, which is in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The agency's Office of Public Affairs is currently seeking two Public Affairs Specialists to perform the full range of activities supporting internal and external communications.

We seek an experienced professional to serve as the lead for the District’s external safety and education program; plan, organize, and coordinate special events; research, write, and edit collateral materials, including fact sheets, newsletters, brochures, and news releases; and communicate and respond electronically to blog comments, Twitter and Facebook postings, and other mediums as available. The Public Affairs Specialists will attend and make presentations to civic and community groups, including some that hold night and weekend meetings; plan and coordinate outreach to individuals and areas potentially affected by planned or ongoing projects, construction activities, service changes, and other relevant District activities; research and respond to inquiries, comments, concerns, and complaints from the public; plan, organize, and coordinate annual safety awareness event; expand and maintain digital photo files; respond to media and public inquiries when providing on-call support for the Manager, Communications and/or the Public Information Officer; and prepare and disseminate updates about ongoing construction projects. You will perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect yourself, your fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm, as well as promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents. Each position, one reporting to the Director, Government and Community Affairs and the other reporting to the Manager, Communications, will assist in implementing the goals and objectives outlined in the division’s strategic communications plan.

Qualified candidates should have sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. We seek an individual with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field, and sufficient full-time experience in a similar position. The successful candidate must have good judgment and the ability to communicate thoughts clearly and simply, orally and in writing; plus good decision-making, problem solving, and research skills. Must be proficient in Word or similar program and must possess a valid California driver license with a safe driving record.
