  • Standard Summary
Assist patients, visitors, staff and employees whenever needed and works to maintain a safe and secure environment for the entire Medical Center Community. Acts as shift lead over the MC Public Safety Coordinators including evaluation of the quality and quantity of their work performances and scheduling of daily assignments. Patrols the entire Medical Center on foot and inspects hallways, stairways, and all other public areas for fire/safety hazards. Provides escort service to employees and others upon request and assists patients and visitors as requested. May represent the Hospitals in court when required. In conjunction with the University Police Department, assists with investigations of all criminal and/or suspicious occurrences in the Medical Center and reports same. Performs duties of Public Safety Coordinator, dispatcher, or other duties assigned. Checks incoming personnel and visitors after hours. Enforces photo ID policy and parcel inspection policy along with all other Hospitals policies. Performs individual post functions as set forth in Department Post Orders.

About the Unit

The University of Chicago campus is part of Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, which contains a significant amount of off-campus housing for undergraduates and graduate students. More than a third of the University's staff resides in areas surrounding the campus, and more than 50% of the University's faculty live in the Hyde Park area. The Department of Safety & Security encompasses The University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD), University of Chicago Medicine Public Safety (UCMPS), Management Operations, Transportation & Parking Services and Security Systems. The department is a unit of the Finance and Administration and aims to provide stronger safety and transportation services to members of the University community. The opening of the New Hospital Pavilion in January 2013 will increase the number of security officers that will provide protective and customer service to the UC Medicine facilities. The University of Chicago Medicine has been at the forefront of medical care since 1927, when we opened our doors to the first patients. Located in historic Hyde Park on the South Side of Chicago, the medical campus includes Comer Children's Hospital, Bernard A. Mitchell Hospital for adult inpatient care, Chicago Lying-in Hospital, and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine.

Unit Job Summary

Public Safety Officer: Performs a variety of security and safety related functions while involved in the safeguarding of faculty, staff, patients, visitors and property. Greets visitors and ensures that each is properly directed based on established security guidelines. Staffs individual security posts. Periodically tours buildings and grounds for security inspection. Maintains logs and writes incident reports as appropriate. Requests emergency services assistance and provides support when necessary. Enforces procedural rules and regulations. Acts as shift lead over the Public Safety Coordinators.

Education

High school diploma/GED required.

A Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), as defined in the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor and Locksmith Act, issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation within 90 days of employment required.

Some college preferred.

Experience

One year of experience in security or law enforcement required.

Competencies

Ability to develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of Medical Center layout, operations, departmental relationships building access routes, admitting requirements, and administrative and departmental policy and procedure required.

Ability to learn the practices and procedures involved in public safety communications and operate radio/telephone receiving and transmitting equipment required.

Ability to learn the geography of the university, the jurisdictional boundaries of the area served, and the location of streets and important buildings required.

Ability to work under stress and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations, adjusting quickly to changing situations required.

Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English required.

Ability to read and interpret maps required.

Ability to pass relevant health screenings required.
