This is manual work requiring considerable physical strength and endurance. This work involves litter removal, mowing, trimming, fertilization, planting, cleaning and clearing vegetation and debris from ditches, right-of-ways, cemeteries and public parks. Work is usually performed under the immediate supervision of a superior and instructions are received at the beginning of each new job. Constant supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks. Work is reviewed through observation of results.
Mows grass, trims grass, lays sod, cleans parks and cemeteries, edges curbs, loads mulch, installs and spreads mulch in shrub beds, weeds mulch beds, cleans concrete areas, and moves dirt. Plants trees, shrubs and flowers. Works on daily preparation of athletic fields and sports complexes for games. Lays out and lines athletic fields. Performs remedial work on athletic fields and general park areas. Digs up and replaces irrigation heads, lays sod, and prepares grounds areas for seeding new turf. Works on burial preparations and funerals as needed. May assist with preparing foundations. Works with Herbicide Technicians in the spraying of herbicides and/or the application of fertilizer in ditches, parks, cemeteries, athletic fields and on right-of-ways. Picks up litter in parks and cemeteries and empties trash receptacles. Cuts grass with small mowers; trims and picks up grass after cutting. Operates out-front mowers in parks throughout the City. Provides manual labor involving general grounds care of public spaces within the City. Cleans underpasses on state right-of-ways and I-565. Assists with landscape installations. Loads truck, ensures proper tools and equipment have been loaded. Sets up traffic cones and flags traffic. Ensures that all tools are cleaned and accounted for at the end of the day; cleans up job sites. Washes truck and equipment. Operates a truck, utilizes chain saws, weed trimmers, blowers, shovels, rakes, picks, forks, tractor with bush hog, generators, pressure washers, air compressor, small and medium mowers, push mowers, dump bed, sod cutter, landscaping box, line sweeper, roller and hand tools while performing essential functions. Performs related work as required. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Work is performed indoors and/or outside in adverse weather conditions involving rain, snow, heat, and cold. The employee is exposed to hazards associated with working around traffic, smoke, fumes, high noise levels, vibrations, dust, chemicals, dangerous and offensive fumes and odors . Safety equipment is required such as gloves, hard sole shoes, safety glasses, and ear plugs. Work requires the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time; perform continuous repetitious lifting of light and/or heavy objects and/or tools, containerized and non-containerized debris, materials, and equipment for extended periods of time; and the ability to repetitiously climb on and off machinery. Work also involves frequent performance of physical task such as walking over rough surfaces, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, pulling, turning, working in restricted and confined places, climbing, balancing on ladders and/or squatting while performing essential functions; and the ability to operate saws and equipment associated with the work. Work also may require physical dexterity in the frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs or body for the operation of vehicles, equipment and tools.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency is desired and some experience in performing heavy manual work; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Some knowledge of traffic laws, flagging policies and procedures. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse weather conditions. Ability to direct traffic and drivers at worksites. Ability to walk for extended periods of time picking up litter and utilizing blowers, weed trimmers and mowers. Ability to use hand and mechanical tools and equipment. Ability to communicate and convey information to fellow employees and supervisors. Skill in the use of tools and equipment assigned.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
