The Buyer will work in conjunction with the Purchasing Manager to provide excellent customer service to the students, staff, faculty and vendors. Assist the Purchasing Manager in all aspects of the purchase and inventory of the Institute’s required needs. The position is responsible for assuring all buying is done within the Institute’s established program and guidelines, while utilizing the appropriate purchasing platform. The position works with storeroom stock clerks to ensure purchases are received without issue and meet any special requirements that may arise.


• Purchase of all assigned inventory lines through “program” , Gift In Kind and local vendors
• Ensure proper bidding procedures are conducted for all non-program product lines
• Source and procure special or unusual requested items, when appropriate;
• Ensure special order items are properly charged in EATEC and issued as requested
• Ensure all non-food needs are procured through the SciQuest system with the proper authorization
• Ensure all purchases conform to the Institutes standards for source, quality and value.
• Ensure vendors receive orders in a timely fashion and with adequate up-to-date specifications
• Assist stock clerk personnel in proper receipt of all products delivered
• Keep all storeroom employees up to date on products arriving in house, communicates specific needs and instructions for said product and issuing instructions.
• Provide any relevant information on new items, substitute items, back ordered items and credit card items
• Provide all internal customers with verbal and written communication on specifics about any issues with orders, market availability and conditions
• Provide all external customers with verbal and written communication regarding specific requirements for products being ordered
• Assist management in all areas of Storeroom inventory and purchase of institute products
• Provide back-up operational coverage as absenteeism and demands dictate
• Assist in all required inventories


• An Associate’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field

• A minimum of 3 years of experience in Procurement and/or Purchasing preferably in the food and beverage or hospitality industry

Licenses / Certifications:
• Valid Forklift Certification (or the ability to become certified)
• Valid ServSafe Food handler certificate (or the ability to become certified)


• Bachelor degree in Business, Hospitality or related field
• Hospitality experience
• Food, Beverage and Non-Food purchasing and/or distribution experience
• Experience in managing product purchase bids
• Experience working with Chefs , internal customers and vendors
• Higher Education working experience
• Graduate of an accredited culinary school
• Bilingual in Spanish
• EATEC purchasing/inventory system experience


• Ability to use and exemplify strong judgment
• Ability to work independently or with little supervision
• Excellent and professional telephone skills
• Experience using purchasing or procurement software
• Must be adaptable, dependable and able to manage multiple projects
• Purchasing experience
• Solid computer skills including ability to use MS word and MS excel
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Strong customer service skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability/desire to work as a teamwork
• Strong oral and written communication skills


• Must be available to work nights and weekends based upon business needs
• Regular work requires a great deal of sitting, standing, lifting, bending and stretching
• Must be able to stand for 8 hours
• Ability to work in extreme temperatures hot and cold for extended periods
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
• Ability to lift and move up to 75 lbs. or more with assistance
