Quality Monitoring is the primary quality liaison group between the factories and the company. The primary role of the Quality Monitoring Engineer (QME) position is to monitor and report vehicle quality concerns to the factories/dealers using warranty, JD Power, and information from the technical helpline/field quality colleagues. Once reported, it is the engineer's responsibility to track topics to final resolution. Additional responsibilities include writing technical bulletins and tracking/managing failed parts from the field.
This position is unique because it requires someone that is both technical and data-oriented. Possessing both of these traits is very unique in this industry. Unlike traditional engineering positions, this position requires significant desk time with very little hands-on work. Because of this, typically the QME position is not an ideal fit for someone with a heavy engineering, quality analysis or supplier quality background.
The ideal quality monitoring engineer has formal technical training and/or work experience as an automotive technician at a dealership background. For accurate data understanding, the following technical background should include at least one of the following:
2+ years of formal automotive technical training (ex: Automotive technology degree). Understanding automotive systems, concepts and components is very important to the success of a QME.
2+ years of technical hands-on automotive work experience in a repair facility
In addition to the technical background, the ability to understand and use data is essential:
A QME must be able to identify trends in large amounts of data and group concerns based on similar customer complaints/failures. In addition, prioritizing these trends based on market impact is crucial.
Moderate-to-advanced Excel skills help the engineer to sort and compare data. Excel is used heavily for this position. The most affective engineers are able to use cell filters, conditional formatting, pivot tables, and Excel functions (Vlookup, sum, average, etc) efficiently.
This position interacts with management at all levels and proper business understanding and acumen is necessary. The skill set and background should include:
Bachelor degree with a focus on business and not engineering (ex: management, automotive technology, international business, operations management, etc.)
2+ years of work experience in a professional business environment
Moderate-strong writing ability for clear and accurate e-mails, technical bulletins and presentations
Moderate-strong oral communication skills to help explain field concerns in factory launch meetings, internal team meetings and phone conversations with colleagues from around the world
