Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Documentation and Coding program by overseeing the workflow of the clinical coding team, facilitating staff and client communications and serving as a liaison between staff and management team members. Additional responsibilities include training new employees, providing coaching and counseling for employees as needed and serving as a project team member for initiatives pertaining to the continued development of the Documentation and Coding program.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides day-to-day supervision of coding staff.
  • Coordinates staffing assignments for the coding team.
  • Conducts technical training and coaching sessions for new employees and existing staff.
  • Strategically supports the continued development of the medical record review process and resource tools through project team involvement and leadership.
  • Audits program outputs for performance and productivity goal attainment.
  • Performs quality audits on all vendor charts as well as internal coding team charts a minimum of quarterly. Results reported to Manager.
  • Act as a resource for Clinical Coders and Medical Coders
  • Ensure that established coding standards are consistently applied in all processes
  • Provides input and feedback on employee performance and conducts counseling and disciplinary actions as necessary.

Qualifications:
Level of Education
  • RHIT preferred or other comparable certification.
  • Current LVN or RN in applicable state required.
  • Five years of clinical and/or comparable medical records coding experience.
  • CPC or AHIMA certification or proof that certification has been obtained within 9 months of hire date from the American Academy of Professional Coders.
  • Ability and willingness to travel a minimum of 30%, (locally and non-locally) as determined by business need.
  • Must have strong analytical skills and an understanding and application of ICD-9 coding.
  • Must be able to review medical charts to extract necessary data in a systematic and efficient manner.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is required.
Professional Certification or License
  • CPC or AHIMA certification or proof that certification has been obtained within 9 months of hire date from the American Academy of Professional Coders.
  • Current LVN or RN in applicable state required.
Level of Experience
  • Five years of clinical and/or comparable medical records coding experience.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability and willingness to travel a minimum of 30%, (locally and non-locally) as determined by business need.
  • Must have strong analytical skills and an understanding and application of ICD-9 coding.
  • Must be able to review medical charts to extract necessary data in a systematic and efficient manner.
  • Proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and the Internet
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills (oral, written and telephone)
  • Ability to perform well under pressure
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening and week-end hours and travel as necessary
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to interact with multiple levels of management including, clients and vendors
