Tests and inspects products at various stages of production process and compiles and evaluates data to determine and maintain quality and reliability of product in order to meet customer requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Plans the method of inspection and set ups for first-run parts that must be checked on surface plate, CMM or comparator. Determines allowable deviations in dimensions and finishes as outlined on the Inspection Plan.
Performs progressive layout operations on parts, castings, and forgings. Determines machineability of part and availability of material for further machining on parts with compound angles, compound and reverse contours, coordinated dimensions, and numerous precision tolerances and/or surfaces requiring three plane coordination.
Sets up parts on surface plates using blocks, parallels, clamps, and “V” blocks to position for readings with precision measuring instruments. Check machine setup on first run or developmental parts and approve first correct part. Sets up parts on CMM and/or comparator and interprets the readings.
Inspects parts involving numerous precision tolerance dimensions, coordinated dimensions, irregular surfaces requiring coordination in several planes, compound angles, and compound and reverse contours which must be inspected by precision measuring instruments from surface place setups and where no inspection jigs or fixtures are available. Check above parts when made up into complicated assemblies for their usability, interchangeability, and/or proper functioning. Stamp or otherwise approve acceptable parts and prepare paperwork as required. Disposition rejections.
Recommends modifications of existing quality or production standards to achieve optimum quality and reliability and minimize costs.
Understands and complies with safety guidelines, quality system procedures and housekeeping standards.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of two years experience and/or training in mechanical and visual inspection; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
