This position is located at the VA Roseburg Healthcare System in Roseburg, Oregon and assigned to the Rehabilitation Care Line to perform all required duties. The incumbent duties consist of the following but not limited to: Administers, scores, or interprets a variety of creative and motor skills tests. Evaluates the assigned patients' mental, emotional, social, and physical capabilities to determine the patients' needs in recreation therapy. Administers mental and physical tests for patients with severe or multiple diagnoses. As an expert in recreation therapy, oversees the administration and interpretation of tests. Maintains professional currency in testing procedures and practices and introduces new methods as appropriate. Guides recreation therapy assistants in the correct methods of administering and interpreting test results.
The incumbent will interview and observe veterans to assess aptitudes and interests by using effective interviewing techniques to obtain objective and factual information pertaining to the veteran's interests and aptitudes. Observes the patient during trial assignments to confirm initial assessment. Interviews veterans with severe or multiple diagnoses that require unconventional interview approaches and treatments to devise effective methods and procedures. Interviews veterans by exhibiting sensitivity to needs and tolerances. Alleviates fears and anxieties. Uses therapeutic forms of encouragement as well as discipline or correction when necessary to hold the client accountable for behaviors. Plans effective treatment by serving as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team recommending treatment objectives. Plans various activities directed towards achieving such therapeutic objectives as diminishing emotional stress, providing a sense of achievement, channeling energies and interests, aiding physical and mental rehabilitation, and promoting successful community re-entry.
The incumbent will serve as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team to establish new programs or activities to meet program objectives. Administers treatment by utilizes the recreation therapy modality with individual/groups of patients having physical, emotional and social disabilities. Population served includes geriatric patients. Implements therapy activities. Provides the equipment, materials, instruction,encouragement, or counseling necessary to promote a positive and therapeutic activity. Administers treatment to veterans with multiple or severe conditions. Evaluates and adjusts treatment by reviews client's progress, introduces new or more challenging activities or adjusts activities to a lesser challenge as the circumstances dictate. Discusses progress with treatment team, suggests adjustments to activities based on sound professional arguments. Evaluates and modifies treatment for veterans with multiple or severe conditions. Performs other related duties assigned.
Work Schedule: various tours to include weekends.
