Provides assistance to a physician on Active Staff or Courtesy Staff with surgical privileges for Wilson Memorial Hospital. Practices under the supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative experience, and collaborates with the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. Have the acquired knowledge, skills, and judgment of perioperative nursing to functions independently in a professional manner as a scrub and/or circulator caring for patients in the Operating Room/Endoscopy. Facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The patient population would include: the neonate patient, the pediatric patient, the adolescent patient, the young-middle aged adult patient, and the geriatric patient.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed within the scope of responsibility.Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization while serving as a role model of professional behavior. Provides care based on awareness of patient rights, privacy, ethical concepts, respect for life, dignity, human worth and the individuality of the human being. Participates in Quality Improvement StudiesProvides competent and ethical care within legal standards of practice as applicable to the RNFA by: *a. participating in preoperative assessment and planning for selected surgical patients in collaboration with perioperative team members in the preoperative location;*b. apply principles of asepsis and infection control;*c. knowledgable of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique related to the operative procedures in which assisting;*d. recognizing safety hazards and initiating appropriate preventative and corrective actions;*e. providing exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques;*f. handling and dissecting tissues in collaboration with the surgeon;*g. clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligation of vessels, and performing other procedures in collaboration with the surgeon;*h. suturing muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon;*i. placing drains as surgically indicated;*j. assisting with cannulation and decanulation procedures, if indicated; and*k. following selected surgical patients postoperatively in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team;*l. perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operation team;*m. performs effectively in stressful and emergency situations.Serves as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to colleagues and other health care professionals in relation to RNFA activities.Works as a professional colleague with the perioperative team and influences multidisciplinary relationships by enhancing collaborative processes.Maintains regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements. Pursues professional growth related to both perioperative nursing and RNFA practice and participates in a professional organization.Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.Serves in the role of scrub and/or circulator as necessary to meets department needs. Maintains a positive communication: Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with perioperative team members.Assists in originating and updating preference cards by communicating physician requests and procedure changes to the appropriate surgery staff especially surgery scrub/circulators.Maintains privacy confidentiality of all appropriate information. Inspires confidence from patients, visitors, and staff by performing and communicating in a professional manner.Helps maintain good harmonious relationships among the Surgical Services staff during all types of working conditions.Cooperates with other personnel to maintain effective relationships: interdepartmental and intradepartmental.Assure open and timely communication with all patients, their significant other, and team members to ensure the occurrence of effective, therapeutic intervention.On Call responsibilities: Takes fair share of monthly call and the holiday rotation.When on call, remains near a phone, and/or carries a pager and notifies the Nursing Supervisor of method to be reached.Responds to work within 30 minutes of notification without questions. PERFORMS ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED WITHIN THE SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Required: ** Current Ohio RN license ** Completion of an RNFA Program** Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 3 months of hire and maintained.** Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 1 year of hire and maintained.** Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certificationPreferred: Certified RN First Assistant (CRNFA) certificationEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Required: ** Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. ** Successful completion of a RNFA course that is approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing according to Rule 4723-16-01 of the Administrative Code.** Two years perioperative services experience* Expert knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique Preferred: ** Bachelor's degree in nursing** Basic computer skills (eg, Microsoft Word) EOE
