The Radiation Therapist must demonstrate an understanding of cancer, radiation biology, radiation therapy techniques, equipment, radiation safety, and the psychosocial aspects of cancer. They must maintain a high degree of accuracy in treatments and charting as well as an awareness of safety issues. They must remain professional and sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient. This position requires a proficiency in the operation of Radiation Therapy technology, knowledge of all Therapeutic procedures, the ability to work independently, excellent communication skills, and excellent problem solving skills.
Works in clinical setting throughout the facility coming in contact with patients, hospital/medical staff under a wide variety of circumstances and is exposed to radiation hazards. Frequently works in an office setting and is subject to a flexible work schedule with many interruptions and varying/unpredictable situations as well as exposure to explosive chemicals/gases/low-level radiation. Occasionally required to handle absentee replacement on short notice that may lead to irregular/long hours, emergency/crisis situations, pressure due to multiple calls, inquiries and unpleasant patient/unit/facility elements (accidents, injuries, illness). May also be required to make judgment/take action, which could result in death of patient, and perform emergency care. May occasionally be exposed to housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals ad hot/noisy equipment.
I. Simulates patients for Treatment per departmental policy while maintaining patient safety, comfort, and protection.
1.1 Explains upcoming procedure to patient/family in a factual and thorough manner answering all questions thoroughly.
1.2 Completes Simulation Set up sheets with recorded field parameter information.
1.3 Completes a clinical simulation properly with physician approval.
1.4 Completes a 3-D simulation properly with physician approval
1.5 Obtains proper information during CT for treatment planning.
1.6 Demonstrates ability to fabricate immobilization devices as needed.
1.7 Demonstrates knowledge and use of Fluoroscopy.
1.8 Performs hand contours and records required information.
Creates develops and labels simulation films appropriately.
II. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies.
2.1 Orders supplies properly and in a timely fashion.
2.2 Cleans room before and after patient procedures.
2.3 Keeps work area clean and neat.
III. Verifies the mathematical accuracy of the dose prescription and all criteria stated.
3.1 Verifies documentation of informed consent.
3.2 Verifies patient identification photo
3.3 Verifies prescription is signed and dated by MD
3.4 Verifies second hand calculation
3.5 Completes the quality checklist before patient treatment.
IV. Maintains accurate records of patient’s daily treatments and delivers dose accurately.
4.1 Operates radiation therapy equipment effectively for the proper treatment of patient.
4.2 Accurately delivers prescribed dose.
4.3 Documents treatment and patient data in the appropriate record in a timely, accurate and concise manner.
4.4 Reports deviations from the standard or planned treatment to appropriate person.
4.5 Prepares and positions patients for treatments using appropriate positioning and immobilization devices.
4.6 Reproduces initial setup accurately
4.7 Properly bills patients for correct procedure and treatment devices.
V. Takes portal films as indicated in Policy and Procedure manual.
5.1 Takes portal films according to protocol
5.2 Corrects and documents any changes prior to next treatment
5.3 Initiates field changes indicated on simulation or portal films
VI. Maintains and checks therapy charts to ensure all orders are accomplished and recorded.
6.1 Checks treatment calculations
6.2 Verifies the accuracy of the patient setup prior to treatment delivery.
6.3 Verifies treatment console readouts and settings prior to initiating treatment and upon termination of treatment.
6.4 Evaluates the patient daily for any untoward effects, reactions and therapeutic responses.
VII. Maintains the clinical and technical information aspect of the chart.
7.1 Obtains patient identification photo for chart and Varis computer.
7.2 Obtains photo identification of all treatment areas as required.
7.3 Records all tattoo’s in comments and diagrams
7.4 Verifies and records all custom blocking and wedges as required.
VIII. Maintains a personal and patient safe environment.
8.1 Prepares treatment room adhering to specifics in chart to assure correct reproduction and treatment.
8.2 Transfers patients safely on and off the treatment couch.
8.3 Maintains visual and audible contact with patients at all times during treatment.
8.4 Knows where the emergency off buttons are located and what to do when one is activated.
8.5 Reviews treatment information prior to initiation of procedure.
8.6 Wear’s film monitoring badge
8.7 Follows ALARA guidelines.
8.8 Follows universal precaution standards.
IX. Performs daily Quality Assurance checks on all treatment equipment.
9.1 Performs daily warm up of treatment equipment
9.2 Verifies ODI and laser daily
9.3 Performs warm up and shut down procedure on processor.
9.4 Maintains accurate records of all equipment service/function/maintenance/etc.
X. Produces accurate custom shielding as prescribed by the physician
10.1 Cuts accurate customs blocks as prescribed by physician
10.2 Accurately mounts all blocks.
10.3 Labels all trays concisely
10.4 Maintains all safety regulations in producing blocks and maintaining room cleanliness and order following OSHA and EPA requirements
10.5 Produces accurate templates
10.6 Records all block information appropriately.
XI. Maintains board certification and required continuing education credits
11.1 Attends continuing education seminars and in-services routinely to maintain current on treatment standards and techniques.
11.2 Maintains continuing education credit as required for licensure
11.3 Participates in total quality improvement program.
XII. Provides patients with appropriate skin care and dietary guidelines and instructions.
12.1 Maintain a comfortable atmosphere by offering the patient emotional support and supporting the physicians advice regarding reactions and skin care
12.2 Offers ancillary services as required.
XIII. Assists equipment technician with repair or adjustments of equipment.
13.1 Notifies appropriate individuals of equipment problems and documents pertinent information regarding date, time and problem.
13.2 Follows up to make sure the equipment is serviced when appropriate.

Education: Graduate of an Allied Health program in Radiation Therapy.
Training/Experience: Experience in Radiation Therapy preferred.
Operation of Equipment: Computer, Linear Accelerator, Radiological equipment, radiation therapy quality control devices, Heustis Block Cutter.
Protective Equipment: Lab Coat, Non-Sterile Medical Gloves, Utility Gloves, Eye Protection, Gown, Lead Apron/Thyroid Shield, Mask.
Licenses: Certified by the American Registry of Radiological Technology in Radiation Therapy or eligible. A valid PA driver’s license is required for this position, liability insurance must be maintained on a personal vehicle and a satisfactory driving history according to the Department of Transportation.
