Recommendations Infrastructure Engineer
At Flipboard we are re-imagining how people consume and produce news and information in the mobile-first world. In the Data Products group, we drive this forward by building tools to help users in the face of information overload; connecting them with other users, finding content for them to curate, and recommending stories and magazines to read. We use a wide range of data-driven techniques to achieve this, drawn from (amongst others!) machine learning, collaborative filtering, topic modeling entity extraction, social network analysis, psychology and old-fashioned straight-up product design. We deal with millions of users and documents – and, therefore, billions of signals – daily.
This means developing high-performance distributed systems at scale.
We need a great software engineer to work with us on scaling and developing our systems. On a day to day basis, you'd be working with Hive, HBase, Storm, Kafka, ElasticSearch and similar software on top of Amazon AWS; we primarily develop in Java and Python. You'd be working with a small team of engineers and data scientists. You will have your hand in a variety of projects - data collection, data analysis, algorithm development, scaling the system to tens of millions of DAUs and working with engineers across other teams in bringing our architecture forward. Our organization is flat and merit-based; you'd have substantial independence and responsibility from day one. This is a role which needs an adaptable engineer and which comes with constant variety.
Deep proficiency with Java and/or Python and with SQL
Experience with Hadoop (or other Map/Reduce frameworks) and NoSQL databases
Experience with implementing numerical data-processing systems at scale (simulations, finance, machine learning, bioinformatics, search etc)
Self-starter with excellent communications skills
Full-stack engineering experience a big plus.
Experience with Numpy/Scipy, R, Matlab, Julia or other similar technical computing environments
