Performs difficult semiskilled work planning, coordinating and leading an activity that requires specific knowledge, certification or license to teach or lead; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Program Coordinator or Center Director. Supervision is exercised over assigned program and staff.
Essential Job Functions*:
Must be physically able to instruct the specific recreation activity and have the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move equipment and supplies customary and reasonable in a recreation environment. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and noise.
Instructs and demonstrates correct and safe techniques to successfully perform the activity; Inspects the program site to identify potential hazards; Removes such hazards or plans how to avoid and warns participants and other instructors; Checks participants to see they have correct safety equipment and that it is properly secured; Checks to see participant is properly clothed for activity; Follows all safety standards and evacuation procedures; Assists with rescues when necessary; Assists with checking condition of equipment before, during and after activity; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
Packing and carrying equipment to and from program site and planning activity itinerary; Coordinates pre-activity orientation for participants; Driving City vehicle when transporting participants to a program site; Provides basic first aid and CPR when needed.

Comprehensive knowledge of program area; Thorough knowledge of instruction practices and techniques; Thorough knowledge and use of all basic equipment and skills; Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups; Ability to document successful experience for the particular activity; Ability to keep records and prepare written and oral reports; Ability to provide first aid/CPR when needed; Ability to operate transportation vehicle.
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in the program/skills being instructed.
Special License and Certificates:
Valid certification or licensing in activity instructed.
