A Recreation Leader I assists others in the provision of leisure activities to all ages and backgrounds of the community population. An employee in this class may work in sports activities, assisting with games at a center; participate in field trip activities for designated groups of citizens or receive cash from and admit customers to a recreation center. An incumbent in this class works under the close supervision of a Recreation Supervisor.

Leads recreational, cultural, and sports activities, and provides instruction to participants concerning game/activity rules and methods;
Makes preparation for recreational activities at one or more sites on a particular date: opens site, sets up equipment, assures that officials and teams are there, ascertains that rules and regulations are followed, controls the crowd, stores equipment, and secures the site;
Assists patrons with program and facility information along with updating facility information, i.e., brochures, pamphlets, advertisements, flyers, as needed;
Maintains the daily maintenance of RecTrac database system by inputting data using Pass Management, Activity Registration and Facility Maintenance modules;
Generates queries as they relate to customer service and administrative functions;
Registers and issues identification passes to participants;
Accepts and processes reservations and registrations for individuals, groups, and facilities;
maintains schedule for facility use;
Assists and prepares facility reports, monthly statistical and summery reports, point of sale transactions, and facility reservations;
Plans and develops sport and recreation programs, drama, music, dancing, and arts and crafts program in order to ensure that activities and events are made available to the community;
Plans, develops budget and coordinates programs, implements various programs and activities for youth, teens and adults;
Communicates concerns and makes recommendations to higher level staff regarding participants' behavioral problems and their resolution;
Communicates activity status and any problems encountered to higher level staff;
Participates in staff meetings, in-service trainings, sessions, and workshops;
Instructs participants in a specialized arts and craft program (i.e. pottery);
Conducts education for various age, group, environmental or natural history programs;
Participates in providing City-wide or multi-center leisure time activity;
Ensures all safety precautions and guidelines are followed;
Makes sure applications and records of participants are current;
Attends to sick and injured children, fills out incident/illness report forms and contact parents as needed;
Makes purchases for special event materials, orders supplies needed for the center, with the consent of the Center Director, informs Center Director and staff with supplies and equipment as needed;
Acts as liaison between City government and local community outreach;
Coordinates year round activities working with the advisory council to plan, develop, and implement recreational, tutorial, and community service activities and events;
Transports participants to field trips/or City-wide events in a City van;
Identifies and develops new sources of activity through networking and researching with other Recreational Leaders, community leaders or organizations;
Maintains enrollment and attendance using REC-Track tracking system;
Keeps Center Director and Supervisor abreast on activities via Lotus Notes;
Keeps Supervisor informed of any repairs or replacements needed for equipment, building or grounds;
Enforces facility rules and regulations;
Uses discretion when patrons have to be turned away due to disruptive influences;
Maintains a safe and harmonious atmosphere for all patrons using the center;
Performs related work as required.
High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama cooking, exercise, and field trips. First Aid training, valid drivers license; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Two-Year College Degree; thorough knowledge of applicable Departmental policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of the assigned recreation or leisure activity; ability to emonstrate, conduct lectures, or lead others in leisure activities and the ability to ensure activities are conducted in a safe manner; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with participants and the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants and staff; and the ability to assist others in the accomplishment of the overall goals of the recreation center/program to which assigned and of the Department.
