Function : Under administrative direction, to plan, organize and coordinate comprehensive recreational and leisure services programs at a community recreation center and/or a major function or program, and/or instructional classes and activities within a specific field of expertise; to collaborate with community groups and citizens to offer programs and respond to concerns; to perform related work as required. Class Characteristics : Positions in this class have primary responsibility for the efficient operation of a Community Recreation Center, a major function or program, and/or Citywide instructional classes and activities.
Plans, implements and supervises recreation and leisure programs/classes to meet the social, economic and geographic needs of the citizens of the City on a basic service or self-sustaining basis; Supervises a major recreation facility and/or major City-wide program/function; Responsible for scheduling events and extensive community facility use at a community center and satellite recreation area; Establishes goals and objectives for a community center and/or instructional section with approval of a supervisor; Develops programs, classes, activities and special events evaluating outcomes and making adjustments as appropriate; Schedules, supervises, trains and evaluates assigned full-time and part-time personnel; Recruits, interviews and recommends selection of personnel; Develops marketing and publicity materials; Provides information and assistance to community groups and the general public regarding recreational services; Serves as liaison with schools and community groups; Schedules and supervises programs and use of facilities; Investigates and resolves complaints; Prepares reports, proposals, studies and correspondence; Responsible for collection and accounting for monies; Assists in budget preparation and monitoring; Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; Makes recommendations regarding facility and/or park repairs and improvements.
Education : Educational achievement equivalent to a four-year college degree in recreation or a related field.
Experience : At least two years professional experience in the recreation services field such as facility management, a specific area of instructional specialization, planning, scheduling, and event coordination in a comprehensive recreation program. Experience directing recreation staff.
Special Requirements : Ability to obtain a CPR and advanced First Aid certificate; Ability to obtain a water safety instructor's certificate and lifeguard training when assigned to the aquatics program; Possession of a valid class C California driver's license with a safe driving record. The employee may be required to drive personal vehicle or arrange transportation between worksites.

Applications and supplemental questionnaires will be screened and the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the following examination process: Written Exercise (25% weight) and a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (75% weight). The examination process is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 10, 2013; final interviews are tentatively scheduled the week of January 20th. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list for employment consideration for at least six months. Candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a thorough background investigation, and may be required to successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which may include an alcohol and/or drug screen.
