Under direction, assists in the planning and delivery of selected recreation programs and activities to the community; provides assistance and support of recreation facilities and sites; performs other duties as required. May be assigned limited programming tasks for adult and youth sports, aquatic programs, after-school programs, leisure classes, special events and educational programs.
The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Leads and implements recreational activities such as: center activities, sports, arts and crafts, special events, contests, drama and other related activities. These activities could be located at a park, community center, school or related facility. Interacts with various age groups, organizations and recreation users to exchange ideas. Leads subordinate staff in programming, care and maintenance of equipment, facility and supplies; keeps records and encourages community involvement. Performs physical activities such as: setting up or taking down chairs and tables, carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, preparing for special events and standing for long periods.

OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Public recreation principles and methods; personnel practices; recreational, social and cultural needs of all age groups. Ability to: Lead and coordinate a recreation activity; maintain program costs within budget; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish effective working relationships; exercise sound judgment within City policy. Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions: Standard office environment and working conditions; however, must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Note: Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Recreation or closely related field; OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Licenses, Certificates and Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license. Applicants must submit a current State of California DMV printout from the Department of Motor Vehicles (dated within the last two (2) months of the filing deadline). There will be no substitutions for the official Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) printout. NOTE: Online applications will be accepted for this position as long as the DMV printout is submitted by the filing deadline.
- Desirable: Knowledge of personal computer applications.
EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%): The method of examination may include one or more of the following: written exam; oral exam; evaluation of education, training, experience or other qualifications as shown by the application, resume, DMV printout; or by other information submitted, or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.
Note: Admission to the examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications on the application and resume. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admission to the examination.
