Provides leadership, technical direction and correctional supervision for an inmate work detail. Provides correctional supervision to inmates participating in sports, and other recreational activities. Performs moderately complex work involving the care and custody of inmates during recreational and athletic events, and activities. Work involves the direct supervision of inmate work groups in their daily assigned duties and includes the responsibility of preventing escapes and maintaining discipline in conformance with strict rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Assumes a high level of responsibility for the care and custody of inmates during recreational events and activities through knowledge of and adherence to laws, rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures governing Reeves County Detention Center (RCDC).
Searches for contraband and provides security; counts, and supervises inmates during recreation. Observes inmate’s progress, behavior and demeanor through direct supervision during planned events. Instructs and oversees inmates in performing therapeutic and recreational activities. Prepares activity and progress reports.
Provides custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates, squatting and bending to conduct “pat" and “strip" searches of offenders, restraining and securing sometimes assaultive inmates. Ensures security measures are represented in planning and overseeing therapeutic and recreational activities.
Reads, reviews, and properly applies information pertaining to inmates and their health and safety and to the security of the facility. Provides leadership, training and technical guidance to other staff; complies with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; and prepares and maintains records, forms and reports.
High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
Two (2) years work experience in a correctional setting required.
Must be mature, flexible, able to command the respect and confidence of detainees/inmates and staff, philosophically committed to the objectives of the facility, and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
