The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks) serves as the steward for over 29,000 acres of land, which includes 1,000 playgrounds, 34 recreation centers, 66 pools and 14 miles of beach. Our primary responsibility is to build and maintain clean, safe and accessible parks, and to create cultural and educational programs for New Yorkers of all ages to enjoy. The mission of the Recreation division is to enable all New Yorkers to lead physically active lives through sports, fitness and outdoor adventure. Recreation programs include specialized exercise classes, youth sports, senior activities, summer camps and free after school programs. Recreation programming occurs throughout the City in NYC Parks recreation centers, parks and playgrounds.

  • Under supervision of a Recreation Center Manager, develop, plan and implement recreation activities at recreation centers, parks and playgrounds.
  • Assist center management in establishing membership goals; help coordinate and execute membership drives.
  • Develop and implement Recreation programming, including fitness, afterschool or arts & culture programs for
all age groups.

  • Preserve the condition of the recreation facility ensuring that established health and safety standards are met.
  • Participate in departmental training and conduct training seminars.
  • Organize and promote special events.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for center and borough management.
Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory, full-time experience in recreation leadership; or

2. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above.

Preferred Skills

1. Bachelor’s degree.

2. At least three years of experience supervising, planning and coordinating recreation programs.

3. Strong writing and computer knowledge.

4. Available to work weekends and evenings as needed.

5. Valid New York State driver license.

6. Bilingual.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
