Performs testing related to regulatory compliance and/or administers testing and files results. Such testing is performed for each of the Laboratory sections at DCH Regional Medical Center, Northport Medical Center, Fayette Medical Center, and Pickens Medical Center. Retains records for use in quality control/troubleshooting endeavors and for regulatory agencies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs both basic and advanced emergency, therapeutic, and diagnostic laboratory procedures with knowledge regarding age specific laboratory needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patient.
Calibrates, standardizes, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots various instruments following established procedures. Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures. Recognizes instrument malfunctions or out-of-control test results and takes appropriate corrective action.
Responsible for all documentation required for the tasks performed.
Adheres to infection control and safety practices according to policies and procedures.
Responsible for training and teaching theory and practical applications to others as directed by laboratory management. Participates and/or assists in teaching continuing education courses.
Performs correlation studies between instruments performing the same assays within the same campus, according to the timelines established by the regulatory agencies.
Performs calibration verification and linearity studies between instruments within the same campus, according to the timelines established by the regulatory agencies.
Performs verification of analytical measureable ranges and reportable ranges within the same campus, according to the timelines established by the regulatory agencies.
Performs correlations of critical tests performed between each campus for patients in the same population (such as chest pain patients who can be transferred within the DCH System).
Performs other regulatory testing at each site, or between sites, or correlations between campuses.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.

- Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
- Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
- Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.

Anyone hired after January 1, 2008 must be certified as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist by one of the nationally recognized certification agencies: American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the National Certifying Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (NCA) preferred; the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or the American Association of Bio-analysts (AAB) acceptable.
If an employee does not meet this certification requirement within 18 months of employment, he/she will no longer qualify for this position.
Requires at least one year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist; generalist experience preferred.
Abilities are demonstrated in areas of assigned responsibilities by successful completion of annual laboratory competency testing. Be flexible and adaptable to handle all kinds of different and/or difficult situations. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
Must possess manual dexterity and fine motor skills. Able to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of
time, reach and bend. Is able to lift a maximum of 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing
up to 20 pounds. Vision and hearing must be normal or corrected to within normal. Normal color vision. Includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals and hazardous material. Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment. Physical presence on site is essential. Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
