We are looking for motivated entry-level reporter trainees for our busy local news operation, which includes the daily Orange County Register and 24 community weeklies and twice-weeklies (combined digital/print circulation is 280,000-plus daily and 385,000-plus on Sundays). These are paid positions and we provide housing for our trainees.
The successful candidates will cover issues and breaking news of both countywide and city-specific interest in our vibrant Southern California coverage area consisting of 34 cities with a population of 3 million people.
As general assignment trainee reporters, the selected journalists will be assigned to one of our beachfront locales like San Clemente, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach; an urban inland city such as Irvine, Anaheim and Santa Ana; or one of the many interesting cities rich in Orange County history like Fullerton, Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano.
Candidates should be recent college graduates or have basic experience at a daily, weekly or online news organization. Candidates should be able to commit to our 6 month to year-long program. They should have solid clips, strong references and a demonstrated history of:
--Being flexible in adapting to daily news demands
--Producing solid, well-backgrounded daily and weekly print & online stories on subjects as diverse as technology, culture, education, health care, tourism, transportation, business & labor, the environment, nonprofits, the arts & entertainment, politics & government at all levels, cops & courts and even team and participatory sports ranging from mountain biking to surfing
--Developing sources and beating the competition
--Being accurate and fair
--Showing passion in finding and pursuing great stories
--Working collaboratively with fellow reporters, editors, photographers and other team members
