The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations. ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

This is a temporary appointment NTE 2 years (may be extended up to 4 years without further competition).

KEY REQUIREMENTS

A Ph.D. is required

DUTIES:
The incumbent will be a member of a research team to develop precision sprayers delivering agrichemicals and bio-products for ornamental nursery and fruit crops. The primary research responsibility is to use advanced laser/image sensors to detect canopy characteristics, write programs to analyze sensor signals, develop a real-time electro-mechanical control system for variable rate applications, establish relationship between droplet size and air velocity, and conduct laboratory and field experiments to achieve precise and accurate applications of pest and disease control agents to intended targets.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
This position requires a Ph.D in Agricultural, Electrical, or Mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering field that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Knowledge of current methods to detect the size, shape, and density of field objects, including image analysis, optical sensors, laser scanners and computer programs is highly desirable.

Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
