The Research Assistant (Genetics and Epidemiology) will assist with a research project on the genetics of coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes. Mail questionnaires and abstract information from medical records to determine cardiovascular status of study participants. Interview and examine patients in the clinic communicating to participants the essence and implication of involvement in genetic studies. Obtain blood samples for lab testing and DNA analysis using phlebotomy skills. Process, label, and store blood samples. Record data in electronic databases and hard copy.

Responsibilities:
  • Recruit study participants utilizing mailings and telephone calls, and schedule examination appointments
  • Explain to patients the nature of the study and obtain informed consent
  • Interview and examine study participants in clinic or on the phone
  • Process and store samples, transporting these in a safe manner
  • Store data in appropriate electronic databases and hard copy
  • Work independently to complete projects for deadlines, and report progress to project manager on a regular basis
  • Interact with study participants in a knowledgeable and professional manner

  • Interact with collaborating investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

  • Become familiar with other studies being conducted within the department, and refer participants to other patients recruiters when appropriate

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree
  • Valid Driver’s license and access to a car to travel to home visits;must have flexible working schedule
  • Willingness to learn phlebotomy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate study goals, procedures, and test results to study participants
  • Must understand and be able to communicate goals of study in order of effectively recruit target population
  • Must be willing to learn data management
