Job title: Research Assistant 2 Position summary: This position is under the supervision of Principal Investigator (PI). For this position, the Research Assistant 2 will conduct research for a pre-clinical project investigating inflam|
mation, neurogenesis, and treatment response to vilazodone in genetically- and environmentally-induced models of depression. Work will include in vivo and in vitro rodent experiments (e.g., rat behavioral testing, drug administration, blood and tissue sample collection, tissue culture, flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays (ELISAs), immunohistochemistry, and multiplex cytokine assays). The Research Assistant 2 will assist the PI and other members of the research team with ordering supplies, maintaining laboratory compliance with federal and local guidelines, grant and manuscript preparation, and related research tasks as appropriate. This person may also be responsible for 1) management and coordination of additional study protocols as needed, 2) graphing and statistical analysis of data, and 3) training, supervision, and management of junior staff including interviewing, hiring, and training new employees and volunteers. Work will be conducted in the Loftis Laboratory and the Veterinary Medical Unit at the Portland VAMC. Some evening and weekend hours may be needed at times.
Required-Bachelor's or Master's degree with major courses in relevant field.
Preferred-Coursework in statistics and research methods
-Coursework in biology, immunology, neuroscience or chemistry
Required-3 years (research)
Preferred-Experience with immunohistochemistry and flow cytometric analysis of blood and brain samples
-Experience with behavioral tests used with rodents

This is a Monday Friday position with occasional evening or weekend hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS EQUIPMENT USAGE: This describes the physical requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. Example: Ability to carry and lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand for four continuous hours a day.
Must be physically able to perform mouse behavioral testing safely and independently.
